I think Yewtree are fishing in a bucket hauling in ex Radio One DJ 's. I bet John Peel's glad he's dead, otherwise he might be mentioned in dispatches.

Shortly before Rolf Harris was arrested, a few jokes about him appeared in the sickipediabot twitter feed. Recently another presenter has been the subject of some jokes in that feed. I thought this thread being bumped was going to be about that. But apparently not.

Paul Gambaccini? I think at this point it feels like everyone was doing it back then and so it doesn't really feel surprising whoever gets linked to these .....

.retracted as I did not want bozza disturbed while naked again,

Well at least not by Paul Gambaccini !

whoosh....
never mind.

Just to spell it out -- when you get multiple cases of sexual abuse which involves an ethnic minority community (e.g the recent Rochdale case), the tabloids are full of comment drawing attention to the race of perpetrators (or complaining that PC culture is concealing it).
However, when you get multiple cases in the white community, no-one mentions race (quite reasonably, but it shows the double standards that operate).
The fact that hardly any 70s TV stars were black is no more relevant to the point I'm making, than is the fact that hardly any Rochdale kebab shop owners are white.

Great whoosh soistes.

Veteran TV star Rolf Harris was nicknamed 'The Octopus' for repeatedly groping a string of young girls after treating them like his 'pets', a court heard today (Fri)

Harris, 84, hid his 'Jekyll and Hyde' personality and desires for underaged girls to maintain his reputation as a a top children's entertainer during his 'glittering' career, jurors heard.

The musician and artist treated one of his victims like a 'young puppy' during a 16-year campaign of grooming which began when she was just 13, Southwark Crown Court heard.

Harris even allegedly abused the 'awestruck' teenager while his wife, Alwen Hughes, and daughter, Bindi were just metres away during a luxury holiday in Hawaii.

He believed he was 'untouchable' and used his celebrity status to prey on a string of young girls in a campaign of abuse spanning three decades, it is claimed.

The Animal Hospital frontman's fame and popularity meant no one challenged his 'brazen' behaviour, jurors heard.

Opening the case to the jury of six men and six women, prosecutor Sasha Wass QC said: 'Those of you who lived through the 1970s will remember Rolf Harris as someone who regularly appeared on television on Saturday night, before cable TV and the internet.

'Mr Harris' glittering career continued well into this millennium as he charmed audiences with his painting and his work with children and animals.'

Ms Wass told how 'talented' Harris is not mere celebrity but a 'national popular figure'.

'And now Rolf Harris appears before you for a series of sexual offences against children committed at the height of his popularity as a children's entertainer.

'It's precisely that popularity and celebrity status which provided Mr Harris with access to children and young women.

'His fame and popularity meant no one suspected or challenged his behaviour.'

Witnesses will give evidence about their 'fear' and 'discomfort' after being 'brazenly' abused while they were sitting on Harris' knee or posing for a photograph with him, jurors heard.

But none of them made a complaint: 'Mr Harris was too famous, too powerful and his reputation made him untouchable', Ms Wass said.

'In many instances you will hear about the sexual offences were brazen and took place while other people were present or nearby.

'Mr Harris knew no one would challenge him - even some of the older girls who were subjected to Mr Harris groping them didn't feel able to challenge him or make a complaint.

'You will hear from a make-up artist from Channel 7 in Australia that Rolf Harris' reputation was such that he was known as 'The Octopus' because of the way he put his hands all over women.

Ms Wass said Harris had a 'Jekyll and Hyde' nature to his personality which was hidden from people he met during the course of his work.

'This hidden side is what this case is all about, a side which sexually assaulted children while they were with him in public.

Harris is accused of preying on four girls - the youngest aged just seven or eight.

He denies a total of 12 counts of indecent assault dating from 1968 to 1986.

Harris is the highest profile celebrity to face charges in the wake of Operation Yewtree, the Met Police probe set up after the Jimmy Savile scandal.

Digeridoo-playing Harris, who gave the world the 'wobble board', walked hand in hand with his wife, sculptress and jeweller Alwen Hughes, as he entered the court.

He listened intently to proceedings with the help of a hearing aid, watched by his wife, who was among family members in the packed public gallery.

Harris scored his first musical hit in 1960 with ‘Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport’, and achieved a Christmas number one with Two Little Boys, in 1969.

He got his big TV break in 1967, with eponymous BBC series, The Rolf Harris Show, later becoming a firm favourite on children’s programmes.

The star was considered by many to be national treasure by the time he fronted Animal Hospital for a decade until 2004.

Harris, who was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honours, is said to be a long-term favourite of Her Majesty.

The entertainer, of Fishery Road, Bray, Maidenhead, Berks, has been granted conditional bail.

He is banned from contacting prosecution witnesses and must live and sleep each night at his home address, with a further condition to notify the authorities if he wishes to move.

The trial, which is expected to last up to eight weeks,
