The dull part of the south coast
Two games to go in this most bizarre and bewildering of seasons and we are comfortably safe from relegation (by 11 points as it stands). With Man City and Arsenal next up wouldn’t it be great if we could top 40 points at the end?

Well, here’s hoping - Man City, with one eye on the Champions League Final and the other eye on the beach, so maybe a draw? As for Arsenal, who blow hot and cold whoever they play and are stuck in mid-table, could they be ripe for a cosy little away win? I would love it to be so if only to watch and hear the absolute meltdown on Arsenal Fan TV. Know what I mean, blud?

It would indeed be wonderful to finish with a happy ending.

Decent chances to beat Arsenal. Individually they have superior quality and they are on a decent run, but more often than not they seem lost on the pitch.

City, not so much. They might play quite a few reserves eager to prove their worth. Sure, chances are probably better than usual as their reserves are simply not as good as the first eleven, but pretty much any of them would still walk into the Brighton lineup.

No team is on the beach. Footballers dont want to lose. Yesterday we saw a Sheffield with nothing to play for beat Everton, we saw WBA almost hold Liverpool to a draw, West Ham really would have wanted to win but only got 1-1 against Brighton. Games remain as intense as previously. The whole "on the beach" thing is a myth, it doesnt apply to modern football where only disciplined pathological winners got any chance of becoming elite players.

I'd take 2 points from the two now now given the chance.

I've had us finishing on 40 pts for a few weeks now and that would require two draws. Unlikely v City. Possible v Arsenal. In my heart of hearts, after the Wolves defeat, I felt we had blown our chances of reaching 40 + but then, at 85 mins v WHU it was back on again. Drawing the last two will get us to 16 draws and14 defeats ( 11 by a single goal ) and means we will have been undefeated in almost two thirds of our games.
The downside is the number of wins ( 8 ) Fourth fewest in the division and only two more than whipping boys Sheff Utd. If only 4 of those draws had been converted into wins, then we would be looking at a very comfortable position. Just not to finish 17th now would be great but still unlikely as Toon have Sheff U and Fulham left and Burnley have Sheff U.
Unbeaten in the last three would be a mini boost to the end of the season.

I wouldn't pick him and I'm not sure Potter will.

Not sure he'd even be selected on current form.

I suspect he will. The red and the subsequent fine and talking to should be punishment enough. Without Maupay and before Lallana came on to the pitch on Saturday night we looked very disjointed and there was no one linking up, coming short or creating space. Our half time xG was very un-Brighton.

Or us against Norwich, Bristol City and Villa when we got promoted, we were on the beach, sleeping off the hangover of the previous night in those games.

That squad did attract accusations of having a bit of a ‘drinking culture’, centred around a nucleus of 3 or 4 players who had the unhappy knack of regularly being spotted enjoying the clubs and casinos around town.
