Worthing
I once found 100 pounds outside Brighton station and spent it on a gram of coke and a prostitute.
I felt guilty the next day and wished I`d handed it in.

Was in Tesco on Church Road a few years ago when my son (about five at the time) said: Dad, what's that on the floor by the trolley. Looked down to find I was standing on £200 in £20 notes, done up with a rubber band.

It wouldn't have set much of an example to the next generation if I'd punched the air and shoved it in my back pocket before heading for the vintage wine section, so I went off to customer services and handed it in. They rang next day to say a Spanish student had come in to see if anyone had found £200. It was her entire wedge of holiday money.

Which made me feel good, and no hangover either. Wonder if I'd have handed it in if I'd been on my own though....

When I was a student in London I dropped my wallet on the district line with a couple of hundred quid I had withdrawn, possibly the money from the first year of students loans.

Went all the way up to end of the line and some old bloke handed it in.

I've never forgotten that, so when I found a massive wedge in Clapham a while ago I had no hesitation in handing it in.

To me, not to do that is nothing more than theft. Regardless of the circumstances it doesn't belong to you and if something is stupid enough to drop it... well I've been stupid enough too.

I once heard a story from a social worker who told me about three kids from Brighton who were caught posting £2 down a drain.

Apparently they'd found £20 in the street (in pound notes) and were having trouble dividing the money fairly between the three of them.

:)

Better in my pocket than the police christmas party fund.

Feeble excuse. It doesn't work like that.

If you get more out of the rubbish you'll buy with the money itself rather than the feeling you get knowing you have reunited the it with the person who has actually earned it, you've got a problem.

Yeah, it's a pretty selfish attitude really. Not sure why, because I'm not selfish in the slightest usually, but I just have a lack of faith that it would ever get back to who it belongs to.

I was with my mum when she found £500 quid in £50 notes (the week they came out)

She handed it in, and after a long time when the police waited for someone to claim it she was got it.

If I found a tenner in the street and had a chance finding the owner I would try to do so. Highly unlikely with a tenner I know. In any case I would hand it to charity if I couldn't find the owner.

If you find a large amount of money in the street, it isn't luck it isn't yours.

I work in Exeter as a milkman, I often find banknotes in the street, most likely lost by people out on the piss the night before. I have no qualms about keeping individual banknotes, but the most I have ever found together is £25. I would hand a large wad in. Round here you can keep stuff if its not claimed in 2 weeks. I have found 4 wallets, 3 of them had ID in and I returned them to the losers without needing to go through the police (2 of those anonymously by just posting them through the losers letterbox), the 4th had no ID and £80 cash, it didn't get claimed.

I once got out of a taxi and was informed by the driver I had left my wallet on the back seat. It wasn't mine but it had the equivalent of 600 quid cash in it plus the owner's id and load of phone numbers and addresses in it.

I ummed and aaahed alll night and in the morning phoned him and gave it back.

That is what a Catholic upbringing does to you I am afraid.

Good point, well made

The lesser the amount, the more likely it would be a needed amount.

However, if it was in a wallet loaded with platinum credit cards and a photo of the Bentley in the drive ..... the less likely there would be any reward, or even thanks. Plus the owner would ask you to go out of your way and spend your own petrol-money on returning it.

My wife found a wallet with 16,000 $hk (1,000 pounds +) last month with about 10 credit/store cards, she handed it in and the police and her had to sign for every piece individually including piles of receipts. Took about 40 minutes. It was collected three days later and no contact was made to thank her...
