Did you just compare Jason Statham to Steve McQueen? Mods that has got to be a ban. He could pass for a lesser character like Danny or the Australian bloke played by James Coburn. But The Cooler King would need someone on a totally different level of cool to Statham.

I'll bite; The Dambusters with much more accuracy i.e. Guy Gibson was a bit of an ********, most of the people killed were Russian Slave Workers and in itself didn't actually alter the course of the war very much - except that 617 became a 'Special' Bomber Squadron which did go on to use Tallboy and Grand Slam Bombs to take out a lot of German targets such as the Tirpitz.
A film about Gibson's successor Leonard Cheshire would be fascinating - the only man to have a Victoria Cross for his war efforts and the Order of Merit for setting up the Leonard Cheshire Homes. Don't suppose it would be an easy sell in Hollywood.

Remakes have a tendency to be crap though, look at the mess they made of The Italian Job and Quadrophenia. But to even suggest they remake The Great Escape should be treasonable, and Where Eagles Dare!!!!!!! go and sit on the naughty step and think about that for a moment.
Classic opening Ariel shots over the Alps with one of the great movie themes, and dialogue at times worthy of Shakespeare!

Outrageous, at times farcical but the combination of Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Ingrid Pitt, and the guy who was Paddingtons TV voice! This a classic that must remain unsullied, We don't want realism brought into it, we want Germans who can't shoot straight, machine guns with unlimited ammunition, dodgy German accents, helicopters that the Germans didn't posses, cars that explode for no reason when pushed over a cliff and wobbly back projections. That's what we want!

One that should be remade, using the proper original storyline with absolutely no deviation, and filmed to the proper end with nothing cut out is.....

Nah... Just televise somebody reading the book out loud.
Fortunately they are being made as a TV series now.....but if not, the abominable first (and last) film in the His Dark Materials trilogy. Fancy hiring, to lead the cast, a Christian who had to be reassured the film would not be an attack on Christianity before she singed up? 
Interestingly*, Peter Jones (who narrated the book on the radio and the TV series) 's son was in my year at HGSB.
