Having an unlimited card, I've done some odd pairings as double headers (and triple-headers!).

With regad to Barbenheimer, there was an article in the Guardian from their film guy who did it, but advised against it because he was so impacted by Oppenheimer and that scene after the bombing where Oppie addresses the cheering crowd he said he just wanted to look at a wall for 4 hours while he digested. I can only assume that having watched a documentary about Oppenheimer earlier in the week and having studied the effects of Hiroshima at school meant I wasn't as shocked or surprised by the film and was able to process and move on to Barbie.

Or maybe I'm just more practiced in viewing widely divergent films in close proximity to each other.

I’ve done a few back to backs as I had a limitless membership for a few years until recently but I’ve not done that for while now.
In fact, I’ve struggled to find anything I really fancy seeing much this year. I think I’ve been there twice so far!

So much so that I’ve cancelled my Odeon limitless. Which was a bloody Kafka-esque nightmare of hair-tearing proportions. Absolute joke.

I’d far rather head along to the Worthing Dome on a weekday afternoon and see something there.

The Odeon was convenient for a while. But I don’t really like going into Brighton on my days off as I work there and it’s a pain to bus it or park up etc.

We’ll go and see Oppenheimer tomorrow. I won’t be watching Barbie though. It looks f***ing shit.

I don't think I've ever done the double.

I guess that makes the Die Hard treble even more appealing.

Saw Oppie yesterday and agree with THPP that it was a bit of a slog - could have done with a slightly shorter film, although enjoyed the aforementioned boobies! Thought the trailer was quite misleading as to the focus of the film, being much more of a character study than hinted at. Thought Cillian Murphy was very good indeed in the role, as were a number of the other actors. I knew very little of the story, so was quite surprised at the lengthy inquests which seemed to stitch Oppie up.

Before the film, saw the trailer for the new Poirot which was a big surprise. The Haunting Of Venice looks like it's more suited to a (milder) Halloween treat, but presumably all the supernatural elements will be uncovered by Hercule as trickery someone is employing to cover up a murder!

Just a warning for anyone heading to Cineworld in Brighton - the normal car park exit that goes round the back of the gym and casino was closed off, so you had to go up to level 7, then along, then down, if parked in the west car park. There were some really badly parked cars just by the ramps making it very tricky to get the right angles to turn up/down them.

What’s Love Got To Do With It (2023)

I thought I’d give it a go because it’s got Lily James in it and I think she’s a sexy lady.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this is a contender for the worst film I’ve ever seen.

Zero chemistry between the two who are supposed to have been in love all their lives.

It has to be seen to be believed. Absolutely terrible. Dire. Hilariously bad. But not funny. Juts bad. Bad. Bad.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
I've been a fan of turtles since the original cartoon in the 80s, and have seen all the major film releases (and some of the minor ones, too). I really enjoyed this one. The turtles were voiced by actual teenagers, and reading up on the film it seems the voices were recorded as a group which is not often the case. This adds a bit more energy as it provides more connection and an ability to be more natural with improvisation, and also having the voiced by kids makes them feel more like teenagers than they have in previous films.

It's a kid friendly story, while also having some things for a more mature older audience (there's even a brief bit of Vanilla Ice's 'go ninja' from TMNT 2 secret of the ooze). It's an origins story, which is slightly different to the source material and previous films. The film opens with a loner scientist who is developing the ooze and has experimented on some animals. A security force from tries to bring him in so an evil corporation can steal his formula. The experiments escape, a spare ooze drops into the sewers, and we cut to 15 years later, where some turtles who were transformed by the ooze are desperate to come out of the sewers, while their rat 'father' tries to keep them secret, keep them safe. The experimental animals are now a crime gang seeking vengeance and their reign of terror inspires the turtles to leave the sewers to try to become heroes.

Good voice cast, great animation style (it seems the success of the spider-verse movies has encouraged studios to be a little more daring with mainstream animation). I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I know it's not going to be listened too, but I can't help but put this out there:-

Sean and Amanda are joined by Ringer contributor Brian Raftery to discuss his upcoming series Do We Get to Win This Time? How Hollywood Made the Vietnam War, which will be running on the Big Picture feed over the next three weeks (1:00). Then, at long last, Sean and Chris Ryan unveil the latest genre in their ongoing niche genre project: Garbage Fish (15:00).

The team have been so excited from the moment they stumbled into the concept, I'm sure this will be a really fun listen.

I listen to some of their stuff. It generally comes down to what film they're discussing/how I felt about it, and how far behind I am on my other podcasts. I listened to their Barbie and Oppenheimer episodes. I'm off to watch the Meg 2 tonight, how much I enjoy it will determine whether I listen to this episode.

Garbage Fish is definitely a 'one for us' arsing about episode, that'll end with "and Bruce is the greatest Garbage Fish of all time".

They've kept the 'Nam films series under wraps, but that should be a decent palette cleanser between summer blockbuster and award season films.

Meg 2: The Trench
Films keep disappearing and appearing in the cineworld marina listings. Some that disappeared include the standard 2d showing of Meg 2: The Trench, so I was obliged to see it in ScreenX. ScreenX is a gimmick where there are projections on the walls beside the screen (at some points of the film) giving the impression of an extended picture. It's not great, doesn't really add anything other than a distraction. You're supposed to focus on the main screen as normal and just have it be a peripheral image, but you find your eyes drifting (especially if someone 'off screen' is talking).

The film itself was eh. It has some silly moments, some funny moments, some exciting moments, but it doesn't feel like it is fully embracing it's silliness. Kinda like a typical Jason Statham performance - it can be hard to tell if he is being serious or self-aware, it was hard to tell at times if the film was being serious or ironic. It also has some notable inconsistencies that even I noticed on first watch.

I was feeling a bit 'random' last night and ended up on Prime watching, a 2023 'straight to video' western.

It was called something like 2 Strumpets and a Donkey.

Reasonably unremarkable fair but for the 2 Strumpets in question.
1 just about held the film together, while the other was stunning.

I wouldn't bother with it if I were you, unless you're a filthy creep.
I watched it all.

The Pope's Exorcist

Usual possession hokum, this time with Russell Crowe in the lead role as a grizzled Italian priest throwing the crucifixes and incense around. It doesn't reinvent the wheel in this genre, but its well paced with some genuinely unpleasant unsettling scenes. Crowe gives a decent performance as he faces off the demonic possession of a young spanish boy. Weighs in at a trim 1hr 40 so doesn't over-egg the pudding. 71%.

Oh, and speaking of people who have done 'the double' at the cinema. A guy I used to work with did the TRIPLE of Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers and then finally Return of the King (on its release date, with the first 2 acting as the build-up). Pretty much 12 hours of sitting in the cinema.

I do like those films, but I wouldn't even dare embark on that in my own living room, let alone at the flicks. Fook that.

Thanks for the heads up.
I shan’t be googling “2 strumpets and a donkey” again anytime soon.

😆

I did remind myself later on but then forgot to drop the correct title in here.

Mines better but 2 Sinners and a Mule is what you're after.
Or to cut out the middle man - Hannah James.

More boobies in Oppie, but a lot of corset action!

A 90 minute western with a lot of fun un-PC talk of "a whoring" and I'm now reminded of a line by the sheriff to the mayor about his wife.

As said straight to video, but hey I was more involved in that than I have been in films with budgets 100 times bigger.
Already I feel I've raised expectations to a level the film can't match.

I just took a look at his filmography (as director, ignoring shorts)

2005 - War of the Worlds (remake)
2005 - Munich (true life story)
2008 - Indiana Jones 4 (sequel)
2011 - Tintin (based on a comic)
2011 - War Horse (based on a play/novel)
2012 - Lincoln (true life)
2015 - Bridge of Spies (true life)
2016 - The BFG (remake/based on book)
2017 - The Post (true story)
2018 - Ready Player One (based on a book)
2021 - West Side Story (remake/based on a play)
2022 - The Fabelmans (based on true life)
TBC - Untitle Frank Bullit Project (remake/requel)

Out of 13, 8 are sequels or remakes or based on existing material, the others are all 'true life' stories.

Now don't get defensive, US, this isn't meant as a criticism of Spielberg. I just find it interesting that he doesn't get criticised for his lack of originality, the way people like to criticise hollywood generally. Not that I think he should be criticised, I just think the criticism of "hollywood" needs to not be so lazy and simplistic.

To be fair, vast amounts of films are based on books.
You’ve missed Jaws there too. Based on the book by Peter Benchley.

I was going for his modern movies.

I also didn't include Minority Report, Jurassic Park, The Colour Purple, Empire of the Sun.
Hook is grey area.

Yes, vast amounts are based on books, and I'm not critical of that. It's the modern (imo lazy) criticism of the current state of film based on a lack of originality as evidenced by remakes/sequels/requels/films based on exisitng IP etc. that I am critical of. Spielberg is widely considered one of the all time greats, and his filmography is full of the same things people point to as examples of modern filmmaking malaise. It's not that he deserves criticism, it's that these things are not the problem with cinema. IMO, like.
