Thin-looking January at DoY/Komedia, has to be said
Cinemas don't typically have their full listings more than a couple of weeks in advance. DoY seems to be full up to 18th, The Komedia/The Depot up until the 10th/12th. Currently showing as scheduled for release in the rest of the month are:
11 January 2019
Stan & Ollie (2018)
The Upside (2017)
Colette (2018)
The Front Runner (2018)
18 January 2019
Glass (2019)
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
Beautiful Boy (2018)
25 January 2019
Vice (2018)
The Mule (2018)
Second Act (2018)
Destroyer (2018)
A Dog's Way Home (2019)
30 January 2019
Green Book (2018)
I think all after the 18th, except perhaps Second Act are likely to feature at DoY and/Or Komedia. I suspect most will also make it to the Depot for at least one showing.
Saw this today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Agree that it tailed off a bit toward the end, but impressive piece of work all in all. Hadn't seen any of Lanthimos's work before and felt the interesting visual feel (fish-eye lenses, for example) made for an interesting take on things, and the discordant soundtrack added to the atmosphere of the piece. Colman was great - not surprised she (and the film) have started winning a number of awards already, and also tipped for some of the upcoming awards this year. Thought Stone put in a fine performance too Fairly unique, quirky, and surprisingly fruity in terms of language. Thanks US.
I saw The Favourite a couple of mornings ago and it was a little better than i thought it would be. My pre-judgement was on the work of the director beforehand and how it rather gotten my goat. I just didn't find his style funny, even though i am not averse to the abstract or absurd, and it grated my innards - The Lobster particularly annoyed me. He doesn't disappear from this styling entirely, but, once the first scene that ached me surpassed we became more led by the acting skills of Olivia Colman and Emma Stone, and even Rachel Weisz, who was better than usual - or better than in The Lobster - as a seasoned fiend. Colman, who is everywhere most of the time, does have a certain power to her ways without any seeming great complexity, and in doing so brings a striking authority to the oft-quivering roles she plays. The film itself was comic in its portrayal of the schemingly malevolent, and entertaining enough, but i felt it petered out somewhat. Better from the director, Yorgos Lanthimos, but still annoyed me in places.
The Favourite
Decent acting and Emma Stone is adorable and talented but 12 bafta nomination worthy ? No, not for me. Style over substance but the typical film the critics all wet themselves over. A Star is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody are far better films overall. The Favourite had some good scenes but the last half hour dragged to the point of thinking, when is this going to end ? 74 out of 100 ( for acting prowess )

Missed both ASIB and Bohemian Rhaposody. Not fussed about the first but I’m hoping to find somewhere reshowing BR as it did look good and I can’t see it being as good on a small screen, thinking of the concert scenes.
Crowds pouring out of Vice when they see its not porn but a story of a corrupt US politicanBTW has anyone else seen the poster for the upcoming film Vice? Christian Bale plays Dick Cheney but looks the spitting image of Chevy Chase as he looks these days. Steve Carell looks remarkably different to...
Was in the US at the very end of the year, and the film itself was getting very positive word of mouth.
Unlike Holmes and Watson which was breaking (unofficial, presumably) records for the numbers of people walking out of it between the 10-30 minute point! It opened Christmas Day over there and would be surprised if it survived until New Year!
Two digit typing error, sorry.Crowds pouring out of Vice when they see its not porn but a story of a corrupt US politican
Saw The Favourite at the Connaught in Worthing this afternoon, have to say I'm in agreement with a lot of the board here in that it is a bit overhyped to say the least. I struggled to have any sympathy/empathy for any of the characters and the sound track in the background was annoying and often painful. The costumes were excellent, the shooting was cleverly done ( although a bit too much fish eye lens ) and the acting ok-ish. Not a great amount of the alleged black comedy humour on view tbh and I was praying for the end halfway in.
6.5
Roll on Stan and Ollie next week !
I am glad others felt the same as me. After hearing all the rave reviews and nominations I thought I had missed something.
