Saw ready player one last week with the Mrs, we both absolutely loved it. I noticed way more Easter eggs than she did but I'm a film and game buff so for me it was almost pornographic. 8.5/10

Watched Den of Thieves today. It's not as good as Heat, but it's definitely up there. Kept us interested from start to finish. 8/10ⁿ

Watched Wildling on Friday night. Quite interesting for the first 50mins but very quickly turned into absolute nonsense. 3/10

Went to see Ghost Stories tonight. I loved it, great performances from Andy Nyman and Martin Freeman, Paul Whitehouse was very good too,. Some really tense moments and a clever plot.

Saw Three Billboards on Wednesday night flying back from NYC. Thought it was really good, nicely paced, great acting although thought the ending let it down.

Also saw I, Tonya which I thoroughly enjoyed, and the dialogue made me chuckle quite a bit - this confused my missus who watched it after me, and didn't see why I was laughing!

Paddington 2 was a big surprise...didn't see the first one, but didn't feel it was necessary. Very nice, family friendly film. I can see why it has been so popular, and why the likes of Mark Kermode have been big fans of it.

Did try The Florida Project but really couldn't get into it. Didn't seem to be going anywhere and lost patience.

Off to see A Quiet Place tomorrow, and Ghost Stories on Thursday. Suspect Rampage will be on the kids' wishlist so expect to be seeing that soon too!

A Quiet Place. A big disappointment especially after all the rave reviews. A very good and different concept but barely anything happened for the first 45 minutes of a 90 minute film and too much momentum was lost to be able to get it all back on track. A few decent scenes and great acting from Blunt as expected, the Alien was well done and that is the key, quite a bit stolen from Alien such as the scene under the waterflow and the look of the thing. Worth a watch but overall my first disappointment of the year. 75 out of 100

Having heard interviews, seen the cast and some soundtrack stuff (Richard Hawley) this movie around an aspiring female comedian in seedy 70s clubs sounds right up my street.

Saw A Quiet Place today and loved it! Really nicely paced, very tense, perfect length, very well acted... Pleased that the bloke with the noisy bag of popcorn quickly ceased his noise (suspect he might have been carefully extracting then sucking the popcorn after a while!) and the two old dears a few rows behind only made one quiet comment during one key moment (walking down some stairs).

It was ok by no means a bad film but seen it before many times and light years from a film like Alien. It was so slow and dull the first 45 minutes it took all the wind out of any sails. Seeing a family not talking and going about daily tasks loses interest after about 10 minutes, as it did. Also why was the boy, the most vunerable left trailing the family on his own ? The Alien smashing through Iron but not being able to smash into a van ? Too many holes and unbelievable scenario's for me

Though Quiet place was superb, edge of the seat stuff for 90 minutes.

Seems I am in the minority. I Will give it a second view when on cable

Have removed the spoiler in this quote - I guess a reminder to all of us to please be careful about revealing too much relating to new films people will be going to see... ta!

Finally got round to watching Hacksaw Ridge. Was very hesitant as it is directed by Mel Gibson and all of his directorial efforts put bloodshed and showboating before historical accuracy. This was no exception. I didn't mind the build up, although Andrew Garfield's interpretation of the lead character as a lopsided, grinning simpleton with nothing but his ideals to offer was almost unwatchable. Although, he is a terrible actor so maybe not Gibson's fault.
The main core of action was okay, if a little boring and simplified when you know the actual facts of the story.
The showboating and sentimental nonsense at the end was typical Gibson. Pretty dire really.
I struggle to see who would enjoy this nonsense. It was even worse then We Were Soldiers. Taking a truly inspirational story and turning it into a gory, oversentimental, sensationalist bore- fest is criminal really. How do people let Gibbo get his hands on history and twist it like this? Especially after his disgrace in Hollywood?

Few people go to the cinema to be educated - its just a slice of entertainment, a bit of escapism, and will always take some artistic licence with the facts in order to drive the story and ramp up the drama. I never really understand people grizzling when a movie that is "BASED on a true story" diverges from the facts. If you want the facts, and all the historical accuracy then read a book or watch a documentary on the subject - don't expect to be educated about the events of Pearl Harbour by buying a ticket to a Michael Bay flick.

As it happens I quite enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge, but I set my expectations to movie mode for it.

It was a bad movie.

Hacksaw Ridge scored 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, so the critics liked it (it scored 91% on audience reviews). It received 6 Oscar nominations and 3 Golden Globe nominations - Garfield winning Best Actor. So you're most certainly in a small minority with your opinion.
