FGM. Jail the *******s.

Seems its catching on here with non religious girls looking to have this done due to pornography and asking to have their bits reshaped.

That's because glamour models have neat and tidy bits whereas the 'normal' is different for everyone. Some girls are very embarrassed to have enlarged labia and think it needs correcting.

Steady on. The point I was trying to make, is that it isn't a religious practise. Of course it's barbaric. As a woman, I think it's revolting especially when women try to give birth and have to be cut to do so.

I agree it's not religious. It's also unacceptable to try and label it as cultural too, in my opinion.

It is cultural, in that it comes from a specific culture, but that doesn't make it right. Education, and prevention is key, as well as prosecution.

MGM IS child mutilation, what the hell else can it be describes as?

Do you not think that ALL child mutilation is wrong or is it only wrong if it reaches a certain level of medieval barbarity but OK if it is just below that level?

What if the victims of MGM grow up asking what kind of society would allow them to be assaulted and mutilated, and simply shrug its collective shoulders. If the child wants the operation it can be done once he reaches an age where he can make his own decision about his own body?

There is a big difference between some neurotic lass getting her labia trimmed because of peer pressure/knobhead boyfriend (who is actually frightened of a proper woman) and a child forcibly having her clitoris destroyed .... FFS!

Anyway this is a very strange thread and . . . I'm out.

Hadn't heard about this - but, batshit mental!

Oh, I see. There's a big difference though, surely, between having your flaps reduced in a proper clinic under anaesthetic and having your clit ripped out, without anaesthetic, while a crowd of women hold you down and then watch while someone sews your vagina up. Still mental though............

Agree that education and prevention are important - but they won't get anywhere without prosecutions, and most importantly serious sanctions (punishments) resulting from those prosecutions. In this country, we haven't successfully prosecuted anyone (according to my google search, though I vaguely remember a doctor being prosecuted a few months ago) and that's a disgrace. And the incidence of FGM is increasing in our country, which is an even bigger disgrace.

Some boys have to be circumcised for medical reasons, such as difficulty in passing urine. Obviously it's done under anaesthetic.

True, and I expect some young girls need medical attention downstairs on occasion. If it's for the good of the child, diagnosed and carried out by a professional then it's the right thing to do,

How does that justify genital butchery on anyone when it is not needed or wanted?

I wasn't trying to justify it, just pointing out that two of my male relatives have had to have medical intervention due to problems passing urine.

It's cultural rather than religion. Middle Eastern countries don't do it, but northern African countries tend to.

Like it matters???
We don't do it in this Country end of!!!....but they don't give a shit about respecting this country's rules or laws because they do not give a flying fvck about it and live here with the intent of carrying on their former country's "culture" or imposing it at every possible opportunity and then shouting "Raaaacist" as soon as anyone dare call them out on absolutely anything!!

I have already explained this if you care to read it. I am not justifying it in any way.

Yes, 'we' do. Or at least, it is done in this country, but no-one gets prosecuted. And why has this been moved to 'Other Stuff'? OK to discuss Brexit, is it, but not FGM? Some sort of subjective selectivity going on here, methinks.
