They’ve both run a non-sustainable model for years and COVID was the last straw but they still don’t get it - Barca trying to sign free transfers of Alba and Wijnaldum and I expect will both be on £200k+/week, Messi still getting £500+k, wanting to resign Neymar. Real Madrid trying to sign Mbappe or Halland (whose agent wants €1000k/week). If they were any other business the bank would have declared them bust.

both Spanish clubs float on a sea of dodgy bank loans, rolled over or written off. general principle of any debt laden business to remain solvent is to make more revenue or cut costs. they cant really make more revenue, except for a massive TV deal related to pan european super league. the other option of cutting costs remains. so far they choose the former, lets see if they now grasp the nettle of the latter.

According to relatively reliable sources, Messi is on £1m a week NET - which means it costs Barca around £2m a week to employ him (ie, £100m a year).

Messi pretty much pays for himself. Problem is all the other shite transfers/contracts, like Coutinho who with transfer fee, clauses and wages cost the club about £150m and who is definitely not selling enough shirts and sponsor contracts to make up for it.

They dont seem to get that football has eaten itself. The money sloshing around in the football business is not required to ensure the “Football Family” continue to enjoy the sport. In fact the current money would provide more than enough for the football family to continue to enjoy it whilst also giving a decent living and profit to all those involved.

The trouble is corporate greed took over a while back and everyone wants a bigger slice of the pie instead of being content with the ample slice they have.

Real and Barca have always been at the forefront of that green. They have dominated La Liga and are now crying poor.
