[News] Fawlty Towers episode removed from UKTV

I think he's getting at the overly sensitive types. He's not advocating racism/racist jokes.

The Fawlty Towers jokes in question, are what we see as maybe crossing the line/offensive today. I don't what difference removing them will do though. People just have to make their own judgements or not on whether they are offended by them. If they are offended, then just don't ****ing watch it or turn off. Not everyone finds the jokes within Fawlty towers offensive.
Of course they don't only the right ons get offended and as this board has a fair few you'll always be banging your head against a brick wall , talk about living in a bubble :hilton:

(c) BBC edited out the offending scene in 2013

(d) Cleese fully approved of the editing

And just to clarify - the original programme wasn't "edited". They created a special version so the series could be repeated before the watershed on BBC2.

You've never been able to play a programme (with language like that) before 9.00pm even in the 70s.

It's all in the press coverage at the time, if you read beyond the headlines.

I watched 1970s sitcom Love Thy Neighbour and have never felt the need to call a black person Sambo, Nig Nog or any other such name - equally I've never been called a white honky!

Maybe I move in sheltered circles...

Ditto. And the characters were just so exaggerated you laughed at them and even at that age you knew what they represented was wrong. What's different today is our assessment that attempting to get a laugh from racism however farce like and exaggerated is not good.

As I think I've stated elsewhere on NSC the East Enders actor Rudolph Walker and his agent must be writing the apology as we speak. How he's slipped under the radar is surprising.

Ah, the irony (again). Since

a) if you're an ethnic minority living under Trump it's more like living in 1930s Germany and
b) I'm sure you once claimed to be a socialist on here

There is no irony......I am neither black and living in the US or Jewish with experience of living in 30s Germany. Nor have you, so unless you can provide some clear examples of that I will treat that statement as puerile hyperbole.

If there is racial injustice in this country let’s call it out and deal with it, what appears odd is to import a social problem from the US and overlay it into the UK? Not only do we have our own problems.....there are also injustices regularly happening around the world which are unfortunate. Why has police brutality on a single man in the US caused this upheaval in the UK whilst HK police brutality got an entirely free pass in comparison.

As for what i identity with politically, these days even with my hairy bollocks if I wanted to identify as Doris I would be congratulated warmly and not challenged by gender haters. So, I’m a socialist you phobe.

Oh dear. You've had a nightmare there haven't you? Liam didn't go to that private school.

He went to https://www.cothamgardens.co.uk/ - which used to be known as Colstons Primary School but was renamed in 2018. But as a Bristol resident you knew that right?

:ffsparr: :dunce:

Nope, I didn’t know that, which is proof if it was needed about the idiocy of wholesale changes to long standing street names, building names etc. Tottenham fans are not going to call their stadium anything other than White Hart Lane, regardless of what the newbnaming rights are.

The newer Tottenham fans that just arrived might though, and maybe they will campaign to stop people even saying White Hart Lane as it oppresses them as new fans with no knowledge of the old stadium and traditions.......maybe they will accept that old fans could say...........Hart Lane.

Ah, the old “reply to a different post with some whataboutism” ploy. Incorrect whataboutism.

WHAT ABOUT the privilege involved in going to the football in nice designer clothes?

Listen to you.....drawn up to your full height exposing all your sad envy about other people lives. I thought Watford Zero was in a category of sad all of his own, well done for breaking that assumption. And you want to chuck the old whataboutery card about too?

This has got to be an education thing........orbmaybe you didn’t get enough hugs as a child.

You chat some absolute shit don't you. This isn't the same building changing names, you thought Liam Rosenior went to a completely different school - hence the 'privilege' comment. The school you provided the URL too = private school. Liam went to what is a state funded school - now an academy. So nothing like the random WHL reference you provided.

Admit it - you don't live in Bristol do you?

I am puzzled as to what those on here who describe themselves as socialists actually believe in. The old USSR, which was a staggeringly repressive regime was called The Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics. Hitler's Nazi party , another staggeringly repressive regime, was called The National SOCIALIST German Workers Party. One is ultra left wing, the other is ultra right wing, and they are universes apart. Which branch of socialism do you belong to?

Christ, you've been absolutely owned and you're still back for more. Did you even notice I was arguing against the removal of Fawlty Towers and in favour of free speech before you tried to change the subject and got something completely wrong about one of Brighton's recent black players?

who the **** are you to tell people what to do

Im not telling you what to do halfwit, but if your emotions require you to watch a 70s half hour comedy episode over & over again, you need medical help, although youve already made that clear, plus of course, the episode is available on other platforms like Youtube. You thick ****.

Calm down me babber.

Erm, didn’t the link you send me confirm Cothamblahblah school was previously Colston primary school? I thought the clue was in Liam Rosenior’s tweet that he went to Colston Primary School not Cothamblahblah. Confusing isnt it, all this change?

I’m glad the local councils have so much spare time and money lurking about so all this change can be paid for......although I guess the taxpayer will get a vote on whether they want this money spent this way?

As for privilege, as the son of a roof tiler bought up in Moulsecoomb in the 70/80s I will treat the whinings from the son of a professional footballer bought up in the 80/90s with the contempt they deserve. Chin up eh.

Not at all. A comedy episode is removed from one platform, but remains on other platforms. The usual suspects emotions are crushed. Thats comedy in itself. Has the removal from one platform affected your life so much? Maybe have a lie down?

Only confusing for some people it seems. And it is nothing to do with councils wasting money because Cotham Gardens is an Academy.
