I was 15 year old sitting on an outside pub bench in Shepherds Bush with some mates when they walked past one day. They were in The Townhouse recording studios recording Labour Of Love In Dub, with Mikey Dread ''at the controls''
We assisted them with procurement of necessary enhancements such as 'green tea'
They were pretty big at the time so it was cool for us, to have them take us round the studio & get cassette tapes of the recordings, some of which didn't make it onto the album.
Earl their bass player was a real good soul. it's a shame that he went through some personal tragedy some time later.
All in all it was a dream for a 15 year old fan(at the time) They were a good bunch.

They did also star in one of my favourite ever films; The Comic Strip's 'The Yob'. I reckon I can quote most of that film line by line. Bloody love that film.

Also think ub40 early lyrics were pretty good as well to be honest

"One In Ten"

[Chorus:]
I am the one in ten
A number on a list
I am the one in ten
Even though I don`t exist
Nobody Knows me
Even though I`m always there
A statistic, a reminder
Of a world that doesn`t care

My arms enfold the dole queue
Malnutrition dulls my hair
My eyes are black and lifeless
With an underprivileged stare
I`m the beggar on the corner
Will no-one spare a dime?
I`m the child that never learns to read
`Cause no-one spared the time

I`m the murderer and the victim
The licence with the gun
I`m a sad and bruised old lady
In an ally in a slum
I`m a middle aged businessman
With chronic heart disease
I`m another teenaged suicide
In a street that has no trees

I`m a starving third world mother
A refugee without a home
I`m a house wife hooked on Valium
I`m a Pensioner alone
I`m a cancer ridden spectre
Covering the earth
I`m another hungry baby
I`m an accident of birth

We can all play the victim card! National pass time now:moo:

P
hip hop lyrical robot was a low point but not strictly them.

people being a bit harsh on them. genuinely loved their genre, nothing to do with race, or at least nothing i ever picked up on. covers were done out of respect rather than exploitation. captured the early eighties in britain brilliantly, and a genuinely multicultural band. but if it suits the narrative better that all jamaican artists should be poverty stricken and unrecognised or under appreciated, then crack on. for the rest of us, fair play to them.

they may not be the coolest band on the planet but if your definition of cool isnt being a keen student of reggae, decent social commentary and buying an island and getting monged on it, then god knows what is.

UB40 were around long before I was born but I'm a big fan. Been to see them a couple of times when I have had the chance.

Impossible to name a single favourite, so here is probably my top 5 (in no order)
