As a spectacle to show the world their strength etc it must be the Iranian Embassy but I am sure that there many that have been more successful that we do not and will never know about. Without them writing books who would have known about the happenings in the Gulf War that Andy McNab and Chris Ryan wrote about.

As the thread said favourite for me it has to be the Iranian Embassy seige.

How anyone can vote Loughgall is beyond me. A civilian died in that, along with injuries to 3 security services personnel and the base itself was partly destroyed. They may have slaughtered all 8 of the IRA twats in the process.

Surely the winning one is between the Iranian embassy (my favourite) or Gibralter, where they got their targets will minimal collateral damage.

So in football speak:
Loughgall: a fairly edgy 2-1 win.
Gib: routine, comprehensive 2-0. Fans go away happy
Iranian embassy: thrilling 3-2 victory.

The result went the right way at the embassy, however back in the changing rooms after (debrief) i can assure you that the way it played out inside was far from accomplished, one ex member of that squad described it akin to "Keystone Cops". So to keep Simo's football theme yes a win but they were still in for training the next day.

When I worked in Holland, I worked with an English bloke, who was so English it was funny, who was married to the sister of one of the IRA people that were killed in that operation.

A couple of civilians were also shot by the sas in that operation and one of them died...
Yes,a shame, but they wouldnt have been if the ira hadnt tried to drive a digger filled with a fertiliser bomb through the gates and hose the place down with automatic weapons, whats your point ?

My point? That this was not a totally successful operation.

The embassy one was very public, and thus seen as a huge success once it was done and dusted.
It was impressive in details, like the tiny hole drilled so they could look at where to blow the wall, and about the viewing devices so they could see who the bad guys were in the dust and smoke. However the bloke stuck hanging outside a window was dodgy.

The jungle situation was a good one, especially when we learned about the state of the guerrillas and their leader - satisfying that they got their arses kicked. Operation Barras - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mogadishu, Flight 181 was tricky, an amazing feat indeed. It was part of a joint effort there; Lufthansa Flight 181 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hard to pick one, but the embassy probably wins because of the profile at home, the location, and before a watching world fearing the worst.

The Israelis are highly rated, but I think they are themselves still in awe of our chaps.
I'm always worried when it's up to the Americans. The hostage/s are in serious danger of getting killed by the good guys whenever they get involved.

One of the terrorists got mixed up with the hostages outside and, when he was pointed out, an sas soldier tried to take him back into the building to finish him off. a couple of others had to 'convince' him to do otherwise. I suppose that could count as a bit of handbags in the tunnel after the final whistle!
