It has to be Murder in the First with Kevin Bacon.
Not just my favourite prison-based film, but one of my all-time favourites ever.

Escape from Alcatraz. Best movie ever made.
Back in school i even did a "research work" about the escape.

Bronson gets another vote and Hunger , the story of Bobby Sands locked up in Belfast's Maze prison and his subsequent hunger strike in a bid to be recognised as a political prisoner. Fassbender is superb and the single take scene where he converses with the priest is 11 minutes of genius.

On a slightly similar note , In The Name of The Father is a great film. To be sure, to be sure.

In The Name of The Father, I've only seen that film once and I remember enjoying it.
Is that the film where a jigsaw puzzle is smuggled in to the prison? It's been dipped in LSD.

Hither (sometimes Thither)
I'm part of the non-Shawshank crowd - i don't hate or find it rubbish, but it's certainly been surprisingly so many people's FAVOURITE film for some time. And also a fan of Cell 211, forming a general adoration for Luis Tosar. Un Prophete and Hunger spring to mind as very good prison dramas for me.
