Country music is sneered at by many in this country and there is an awful lot of pap that calls itself country, but it really annoys me when friends tell me they hate country music. It's just like saying 'I hate jazz.' Which country do you hate? If it's Shania Twain, I'm with you, but if it's Bobbie Gentry, you want your head testing.

I loved my dad's Johnny Cash records as a small child, but it was probably Costello's record that gave me the confidence to be putting Hank Williams' 'You're Cheating Heart' on the pub jukebox when I was 16 and defending it to my dismissive friends. I would probably take George Jones' version over Elvis's these days, but Costello and his mate Nick Lowe have written some great country songs themselves; 'Indoor Fireworks', 'Country Darkness', 'The Beast In Me', 'Lately I've Let Things Slide'.

Rich Hall's excellent 'Countrier Than You' documentary covers a lot of the history and the pitfalls and shows that, like rock, it's countless different genres under one heading. You can hate some of it, but love other bits. Another BBC4 documentary about Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmy Lou Harris brought this to my attention. It's beautiful and it's inspired by the traditional folk music of North America, but there isn't a cowboy hat in sight.
