Hey Joe is not Dylan.
Boxer is Paul Simon but dylan covers it on Self Portrait.
Favourite song; Visions of Johanna. Live version on bootleg 1966 concert is awesome.

Somersetshire
Down the road the night is falling
And the day is getting dark
As the night comes in a falling
The dogs lose their bark
And the silent night is shattered
From the sounds inside my mind
I am one too many mornings
and a thousand miles behind.

From the crossroads of my doorstep my eyes begin to fade
And I turn my head back to the room where my love and I have laid
Then I turn my face back to the street,to the sidewalk and the signs
And I'm one too many mornings and a thousand miles behind

It's a restless hungry feeling that don't mean no one no good
When everything I'm saying You can say it just as good.
You are right from your side,I am right from mine
We're both just one too many mornings and a thousand miles behind.

Oh,and just about any other Dylan song as well.

What Icy Gull said.

They're selling postcards of the hanging
They're painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row

Cinderella, she seems so easy
"It takes one to know one," she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he's moaning
"You Belong to Me I Believe"
And someone says," You're in the wrong place, my friend
You better leave"
And the only sound that's left
After the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up
On Desolation Row

Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
The fortunetelling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
Everybody is making love
Or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing
He's getting ready for the show
He's going to the carnival tonight
On Desolation Row

Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession's her religion
Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
Noah's great rainbow
She spends her time peeking
Into Desolation Row

Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
He looked so immaculately frightful
As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
And reciting the alphabet
Now you would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row

Dr. Filth, he keeps his world
Inside of a leather cup
But all his sexless patients
They're trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser
She's in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read
"Have Mercy on His Soul"
They all play on penny whistles
You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
From Desolation Row

Across the street they've nailed the curtains
They're getting ready for the feast
The Phantom of the Opera
A perfect image of a priest
They're spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they'll kill him with self-confidence
After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls
"Get Outa Here If You Don't Know
Casanova is just being punished for going
To Desolation Row"

Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
To Desolation Row

Praise be to Nero's Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
And everybody's shouting
"Which Side Are You On?"
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
About Desolation Row

Yes, I received your letter yesterday
(About the time the door knob broke)
When you asked how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can't read too good
Don't send me no more letters no
Not unless you mail them
From Desolation Row

You'll enjoy this little snippet from 1966 then LB :yahoo:

Just been listening to the Traveling Wilburys - Dylan, Harrison, Orbison, Petty & Lynne.

Will we ever see such a collection of musicians form a group of this like again?

Great stuff! :bowdown::bowdown:

Masked & Anonymous Song Lyrics:
http://www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/masked_anonymous_soundtrack/

e.g.

There is a city of peace
Where all [foul form of] destruction will cease
When the mighty have fallen and there's no police
There is a city, a city of peace
There is a city of hope
Across the ravines by the green sunlit slope
All I need is an axe and a rope
To get to the city of hope.

This sums up the film really, not really up to the best standard. I could not watch the film a second time.

I expect this is popular with pub bands because of the Hendrix version and there are not too many words to remember:

ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER
(Words and Music by Bob Dylan)
1968, 1985 Dwarf Music
"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."
"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."
All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

PS:

I remember doing my English Language "O" level and putting in the phrase "bright as any sun" from the same album:

while the mission bells did toll.
he just stood there staring
at that big house as bright as any sun,
with four and twenty windows
and a woman's face in ev'ry one.

I thought the examiner could have been a Dylan fan. He wasn't!

Ballard of a thin man currently hits the spot for me, but I couldn't pick just one favourite.

You have many contacts
Among the lumberjacks
To get you facts
When someone attacks your imagination
But nobody has any respect
Anyway they already expect you
To just give a check
To tax-deductible charity organizations

You've been with the professors
And they've all liked your looks
With great lawyers you have
Discussed lepers and crooks
You've been through all of
F. Scott Fitzgerald's books
You're very well read
It's well known

Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin',
I was layin' in bed
Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red.
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough.
And I was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through,
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess,
But I used a little too much force.
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best.
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin' away
I heard her say over my shoulder,
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue,"
Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell.
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
Right outside of Delacroix.
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind,
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "Don't I know your name?"
I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs,
There was music in the cafes at night
And revolution in the air.
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside.
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn,
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew,
Tangled up in blue.

So now I'm goin' back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now.
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives.
Don't know how it all got started,
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.
But me, I'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
Tangled up in blue.

Dylan sings like he's still got his walkman on, but is probably the greatest songwriter of all time.

For the purpose of ths thread, the correct answer is 'All Along the Watchtower'.

Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands

I've used it to convert people to Dylan

you just need to time it right, play it to them and then they understand and their lives are better

I could list 30 or 40 other Dylan songs that are my favourite songs on a given day

but on on any given day my favourite song will always be a Dylan song

On brief reflection it's gotta be 'Like A Rolling Stone'. I don't care if that sounds like an obvious choice 'cause everytime I hear it it makes me want to:

1) Sit down and try to catch my breath.
2) Pick up a guitar
3) Bounce off of the walls
4) f***
5) Give up on writing, it's pointless
6) Write more
7) Move somewhere where I can play 'Like A Rolling Stone' at earbleeding loud volume forever
8) Phone my parents to tell the how good the song is
9) Do something with my life
10) Get the f*** out of here

It's awesome, f***ing awesome

Like a rollin' stone is the correct answer .... I tend to find with Dylan songs that I have to be in the right mode for the 'right' song, but Like Rollin' Stone suites any mode.

BTW, Him and the Band were excellent

I saw him on the 'Budokan' period tour, at Blackbush Aerodrome.
As can be heard on that Budokan LP, he could change the tune for every song, and they would still be great.

His guitar playing was never all that though, and his singing voice is absolutely awful for singing with! A lesson to all hopeful musicians and songwriters everywhere.

He can`t sing, he can`t play guitar and he can`t play the mouth organ.....

But he does all 3 brilliantly.
