For me, it was...

1. Sheff Wed at home in late 70's, 33,000 evening game, in the old 3rd Div.
2. Play off final at Millenium Stadium v Bristol City (same division)
3. Newcastle away, old second division

Could be SWFC again this time

Plymouth away 2000/01 I had been supporting the Albion for twelve years and had never witnessed a promotion before. Great day out and post match celebrations. I think we were two up within the first fifteen minutes. Brooker & Zamora I think.

Pretty much agree with those games but would have Newcastle away as my no. 1

yes, but the Goldstone was jumping that night, I had never known anything like it - all four sides of the ground buzzing for 90 mins

Your No 1 was mine also. Remember stopping at a pub on the way home had trouble ordering a drink let alone trlling the Land Lord the score because I had lost my voice after singing in the North Stand.

I can't remember anything about the game apart from the (twice?) re-taken penalty in front of the South Stand. Nobby or Wardy notched it eventually. Who scored the other 2 goals?

Remember the Wednesday game well.

Eric Potts was playing for them and scored 2 I think. We signed him up next season.

The noise was deafening that night. Surges in the north where your feet dont touch the ground.

Think it ended 3-2. Memorable pitch invasion. Coppers making a token effort to stop it.

Plymouth Away - 2000/1
Bristol Rovers at Home - way back
Not sure if it counts but possibly the best of all was Peterborough Away 2001/2 when we actually went up the following day when Reading slipped up - but the hysteria when Zamora netted in the second half was something to behold. I met up with a Posh supporting work mate after and he said he'd never seen a set of fans over-celebrate a goal so much :lolol::thumbsup:

The Sheffield Wednesday game had it all. 33,000 fanatical supporters rammed in to the Goldstone. Without checking the facts, I seem to remember Wardy missing a penalty in the first half and going 1-0 down, coming back to be 3-1 up then Weds making it 3-2 to make it a bum-clenching final few minutes. We then heard that another team (someone remind me who!) had lost, meaning we were up!

The noise that night was immense. I remember going to a friend's uncle's house up near the Greyhound Stadium after the game - they said they'd never heard any noise like it coming from the Goldstone. There was something special about it being a night game, they were always more atmospheric at the Goldstone anyway. It capped a truly memorable season, too.

Like Lord Bamber, I listened to the Newcastle game on the radio (still have the highlights from the commentary on a cassette tape somewhere, sadly!). When they pulled a goal back in the second half, I literally couldn't bear to listen so went out for a walk - came back at 5pm and we were in the top flight!

One of the lads I was with set off before the final whistle with coppers chasing after him; the ref halted play as he made it to the South Stand. Dick Adland, otherwise known as Dick Slexya, drummer for the Piranhas.

Never been to one, but listened to both the Plymouth game and the play-off final on the radio.

When the whistle went at Home Park I can vividly remember leaping up the air (punching a light fitting and taking the skin off my knuckles) - it meant we were back after so many years in the bottom division, worrying about our future, a great moment.

I think as far as match and atmosphere were concerned the Sheff Wed game WAS better than Newcastle. The crowd had been pretty noisy all season though, remember the League Cup games against Ipswich and Derby? We'd got promoted in 1972 in a night game (against Rochdale) and the atmosphere was nothing like the Sheff Wed game.

I think you've remembered it pretty well, I'm pretty sure we did go 1-0 down and Wardy definitely missed a penalty. We got another won and Mullery got Horton to take it. There was a 'false' invasion before the end as we all ran on thinking the referee had blown for full time and the players were waving at us to get off!

I think it's an age thing. Those promotions meant more to me because I was young and nothing, but nothing was more important to me than a Brighton win. Never gone quite as apeshit again as I did for the promotions under Mullery. (Except for the FA Cup semi-final obviously)
