The Narnia series.

Later, King Solomon's Mines (well written, swashbuckling story, but, by today's mores, oh so racist).

Later still, Penthouse letters.

The Twits was a personal favourite but loved all Roald Dahl.

Also remember Stig Of The Dump.

The Iron Man

Also have vague memories of a series about a vampire who only used to eat Ketchup. Can't remember what it's called now. Vlad? Over 30 years ago now!

The Machine Gunners was also a good one for me.

Bob Westall was our Art Teacher at Sir John Deane's Grammar School in Northwich back in the 1970's.

He was bit of a miserable bugger but I suppose he had to deal with a bunch of non-artistic teenagers who just wanted the lesson to finish.

Never read the book but all the reviews are very good, I must get around to it at some point!

Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. A must buy if your kids are about eight. Still love the book even now.

Alfred Hitchcock wrote a series of books about amateur detectives (boys version of Nancy Drew I suppose), the 3 investigators I think, Jupiter Jones was the main character.

Later would have been The Hobbit and Lord of the Flies
