Fave Bus Routes in Brighton & Hove

Had planned a day out, parking the car at Seaford, this bus to Beachy Head, walk down into Eastbourne, and after chips, ice cream and shopping, one of the 12 series back to Seaford. Unfortunately 13x don't seem very frequent on weekdays (I think there are only three a day) so it didn't happen. Pre family used to enjoy a stroll on the Seven Sisters confident that there were plenty of buses, even on a Sunday.

The 29 from Brighton to Tunbridge Wells is a very picturesque journey.

For old time's sake, the 81/81A.

Well we had a thread on favourite bus stops in the city recently, so I thought why not start one on fave bus routes?

If we are just going to consider routes that run at least partly in Brighton & Hove, I'd like to nominate two.

Firstly, probably most peoples favourite, the Coaster 12 group of routes, starting in Brighton, and meandering along the coast, past Rottingdean, Peacehaven, Newhaven, and Seaford, taking in glorious sea views en route, and of course Seven Sisters and Beachy Head, before reaching the seaside town of Eastbourne.

I'm also a fan of a very different route, the 27, especially travelling westbound, after it turns off from Dyke Road, and gingerly navigates the hilly residential estates of Westdene, quite a feat for a double decker in some places!, before ending up outside Withdean Stadium.

Feel free to nominate other routes within Sussex, if you would like to look further afield. I could wax lyrical about the Stagecoach 17, but I don't want to send too many of you to sleep.

It was better when it was the 60 from Mile Oak to the Old Steine and there was a separate service to Whitehawk. Running buses across the busy city centre simply causes them to get stuck in traffic and become unreliable.

I have just got the bus back from Rottingdean, standing room only, dullest bus journey ever.
I would have been happy to pay for a cab, the others I went out with wanted to get the bus.

I like the 25 from The Old Steine as the quickest and easiest way to get to the Amex. for me. Wife and I use our Old Coggers Bus Pass a lot and have done the Thursday Haywards Heath to Eastbourne a few times.

Slightly OT I know but an old friend of mine, sadly no longer with us, used his pass to go from Guildford to Exeter and back went with his tent and had about 3 days in Exeter. took him 2 days each way I think it was.

Can't beat the 7. From George Street to the Marina. Wetherspoons to Wetherspoons.

My fav too. Goes past the end of my road every 7 mins. You couldn't get much better than that

My least favourite one is the replacement bus service from Brighton to Worthing which due to rail engineering works today I need to get today

Surely an undercurrent of smugness for thee. How can anyone offer a route that matches the number 17 ? A splendid run on a lovely summer day and the Partridge Green route where no-one seems to get on or off.

I wonder if the Partridge Green diversion is something to do with an agreement after the Beeching axe.

Wasn't that route known as the 117 at some stage ? (Southdown).

It was the 107 under Southdown, and indeed remained so for quite a few years after the Stagecoach takeover, until the change to the 17 ten or so years ago I would guess.

In fact until the change to the 17 it had quite a complicated working, operating as a 107 between Brighton and Horsham, and then becoming a number 2 from Horsham to Worthing. Returning to Horsham as a 2, and then, you guessed it, back to Brighton as a 107 again. Everyone asleep yet? Jolly good!

Although as you say, comparitively few people seem to join/leave the bus along the Partridge Green 'loop', the village does have a fairly sizeable population, and being off the main A281 would be completely stranded public transport wise, without the deviation of the 17..

It was the 17 when Southdown ran it. My Dad came from Henfield.

Yes it was originally the 17 I believe many many years ago, then bacame the 107, and is now proudly displaying it's original route number once again.
