Perhaps someone who understands the offside law could explain why Fati's goal was subjected to an offside review. There was a Villa player off the pitch beyond the goal line. Surely he would count as a defender wouldn't he.

You have to have two players between yourself and the goal line. They were checking to see if Fati was closer to the goal than Martinez.

Yes, and he did. however he was also close to level with Martinez, which had he been in front of, would have placed him offside. Took far too long to decide, but it merited a look.

Haven’t seen the foul on Solly either yet for their second, but it looked a definite one from where I was….

I believe, because I read it elsewhere, that a defender off the pitch is counted as being on the goalline for offside purposes

No, the guy off the pitch was involved. In terms of judging the offside he was on the goal line. In effect he was in the position the keeper would often be (last man) and Martinez was the last outfield defender we were judging the offside on.

Martinez was marginally further back than Fati, so playing him onside. Shouldn't have even been an issue anyway though as looked like the Villa player made the pass.

Yes, it was a clear foul but Attwell, who useless, bent or both, decided it was far enough back in the play for the defence to reset. Nonsense decision from a moron stealing a living.

It was a foul, a free kick should have been given immediately so the goal should not have stood. It was a clear and obvious error by the ref not to have given it, but it was Attwell on VAR and he’s got history in f***ing us over.

They drew the lines on Martinez because, as many say, the guy off the pitch counted as being on the line. Fati was just onside - just, it was close.

The reason they took so long to check was to see if Pedro or the defender had played the ball. If they'd done the lines first then they could have saved a minute.

Yes, it was played backwards, but the rule just says when the ball is played, not when the ball is played forward, I used to think the ball had to be played forward too.

As others have said, if there is a defender off the pitch then for the purposes of the offside rule he is thought of as being on the goal line and the keeper then becomes the last defender.
Attwell (wanker) really tried his hardest to chalk it off.

It was really interesting because the villa defender kicked the back of Pedro's boot, which was touching the ball, in effect making the pass. As Pedro was last to touch it, it presumably counts as his pass. But I was wondering if, had Fati been offside, we'd have got a penalty as the defender made no contact with the ball.
