Hoping you can help, the cat had four kittens on Friday, 3 are doing really well but the 4th is half the size and weight of the other 3. We've bought some kitten formula on the advise of the vet, my wife's at work and I can't get the damn thing to open it's mouth and have a go. Do you have any suggestions? I don't want it dying on my shift :(

Have you seen the clips of John Sitton giving half time team talks? I'm afraid it's your only remaining tactic. You're going to have sit all the kittens down together, and then pick on the smaller one and really lay into them, make the others feel really uncomfortable about the way you're picking on this one, unfortunate, creature and hope that the shame leads them to accept your offer of kitten formula.

Failing that, I'm not sure what other option you have I'm afraid.

Oh crikey. I seem to recall that a friend had a similar problem with a puppy. The best way is to get a syringe and do it that way. Not the front on the mouth, but where the lips meet at the side of the mouth and squeeze it in gradually, so as not to choke it.

Hope that helps!

Ps One of my best friends is a vet. I can seek advice if you think that might help.

Get a cotton bud, dip it in the formula, squeeze each side of the jaw (gently!) the kitten will open its mouth. Touch the cotton bud onto the kittens tongue. Wait a few moments for the kitten to drink the formula and repeat.

Worked on 5 out of 6.

I have said I would not be coming on here unless it is a match thread due to the abuse I have had over cats and the protection of
this is very sad but mum cats know what they are doing and rarely will the protect or feed one who will not survive but sometimes we can help them along and they do go on to be OK.
in this case it was not to be.
you should not beat yourself up about it these things happen he or she was not for this world.
look after the remaining three and Mum and I am sure they will be OK.
hope this helps

Thanks for your help, and all the others. Wow, a fully grown man had tears in his eyes last night. Poor little sausage. Onwards and upwards etc etc
