There are checks, the only good thing about going by Eurostar is that you can take liquid etc with you, which is handy if all you want is a drink of water!

Took me 5 minutes to get from the ticket barrier to departure lounge at St Pancras last week. You wouldn't get through that quickly at an airport.

I find security checks for Eurostar odd when you can bring a car with pretty much whatever you want through the tunnel on a Shuttle and all they do is swab some of them for explosives residue.

Its not like you can hijack the train and crash it in to something random, and even if you could - you could do that to the Shuttle too!

As goes ticket barrier to gate in 5 mins - you can do that in a small airport; the train stations have the advantage of only having a small few international departures to worry about compared to the same checks for every flight in a big airport. I use Waterford Airport occasionally - two gates, five checkin desks, a single retail unit, carpark outside the front door - and its 5 mins through there too.

Taking train from Cologne to London next week - 118 euro return (could have been 90 something). Does have to change in Brussels though. 4 and a half hours and (hopefully) more relaxing than the flying process - let's wait and see...

ummmm...excuse me...

Eventually once we get the lines sorted in this country we will then get a proper high speed network.

I don't call travelling at 125 - 140 mph high speed anymore, when the rest of Europe has trains that run at 186mph, but that's not the end of it. I do believe the French are running or will be running their TGV service at 225 mph on some lines.

Way out west
TGV is running at twice the speed of sound between vendome and montpellier FACT

Umm, not so sure about that...my limited understanding of the laws of physics and rudimentary maths suggests otherwise.

The speed of sound is roughly 330m/sec
So, twice that is 660m/sec
Multiply that by 3600 to give the distance travelled in an hour.
Which would give a speed of roughly 2376kph
Or, 1485mph in old money.
