Respect. Must be pretty fit to climb that, do a job of work and get down safely after.

Have climbed up a couple of stages of Heathfield transmitter (for work stuff many years ago) which is dwarfed by the tower in this video, even so I recall the sensation of the mast really swaying in the crosswinds. No solid objects around to give a sense of security, fortunately I was ok but effect can cause some punters to freeze and become 'cragfast'. Goes without saying that can't afford to lose concentration for a second when placing every foot and handhold and every time you clip on or off the safety clips, so it is mentally as well as physically demanding. The thing that used to focus the mind was if it was wet or frosty, or getting dark!

But a nice view across to France and of planes going into Gatwick.

It is truly mental, my stomach was really churning.

I also spat my coffee all over the screen when I read the safety helmet comment!

In case he falls off and lands on his head silly

Must be one hell of a helmet, does it have a parachute built in, or pop out wings, or maybe a helicopter rotor, or perhaps is it 1700' tall or something

I actually do feel quite ill now after watching that, those bloke must have nerves of steel literally, either that or a total death wish and disregard for their own lives !!
I wonder how much they get paid ?

My dad told me a little anecdote of when he was an apprentice radio engineer, and he was up on a mast (not as high as that one obviously) with his boss fixing something, no harness but on a metal platform quite high up. He was right next to the small trapdoor thing they climb through to get on the platform, and he says he lost his balance and began to fall backwards through the trapdoor. His boss reacted immediately, leant forward and managed to grab him BY HIS HAIR! He then pulled him back up onto the platform by the hair before he could fully fall through the trapdoor.

My dad laughs about it as if it were just a funny story but of course pooh poohs the notion that he would have fallen to his death!

Im not a person who is scared of heights, but that has made me go all wobbly legged and my nuts are in my stomach. And without a safety line whilst climbing, only attached to have a break,

No thanks.

And then having to shimmy up right onto the top..........

Why can't they use a helicopter and drop someone into it?

Isn't there one (in China?) or somewhere where they just walk along a series of planks of wood nailed to the side of a cliff? That's terrifying.

Here we go now. I see these lightweights have harnesses!
