No one should be going there, putting money into that regime, seeing a sanitised puppet show, which is what it is for tourists, predominantly thick wealthy Yanks who have no real idea about NK, or choose to wilfully ignore it, and just want to do a bit of goldfish bowl dark tourism.

Was genuinely surprised to see NK athletes at Paris 2024, let alone them being allowed to hug/ engage with fellow athletes. Presumably they and the coaching staff all had families back home to prevent defections.

An ex colleague who used to work in financial crime law enforcement was deployed there to deliver investigation training. They and the team were monitored constantly even had a chaperone on the outbound plane. They were given a list of people they were allowed to talk to, even thanking someone unauthorised for holding a door was challenged and nearly caused a diplomatic incident.

When I was living in Hanoi, I taught a young North Korean guy English for a year or so. He was a lovely kid, really inquisitive and kind-hearted. Although his ambition was to be a fishmonger, he was destined (under orders of the regime) to be a businessman.
