Going the other way it's easy to assume the Pretenders were American but only Chrissie Hynde is.

I used to think Audrey Hepburn was British but she was born in Belgium and her mother was a Dutch noblewoman.

He was a bit before my time but I used to think Gene Vincent was Welsh for some reason. No idea why. Maybe the Ian Dury song made me assume he was British. Not sure where the Welsh assumption came from. He was actually born in Norfolk but the one in Virginia.

Another one before my time who I assumed was British was Eddie Cochran who was American but my confusion was probably caused by the fact that he died in a car accident in England.

Going the other way again I assumed the actor Andrew Lincoln who plays Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead was American but he has a very English accent when he speaks in real life.

This surprises me. You should check out Teachers or This Life

I believe he's also a massive Barnsley fan, or is it Rotherham? ???

Edit: Actually an Exeter supporter apparently!!

I watched the complete series of the Wire and only found out the Idris Elba and Dominic West plus a few others were British the next time I saw them, when they were speaking in their natural accents.

A lot of people would assume Prince Philip was British but he was born in Greece and also has Danish heritage and was born into both those royal families
