I had a conversation with a youngster (he's c 25) at work the other week - he didn't know that Bob is short for Robert.

He's no idiot either - he said that nobody young goes by 'Bob', with any younger Roberts being shortened to Rob!

Bob Flanagan (super masochist)

Bob had cystic fibrosis and he resorted to masochism and various forms of self mutilation as a form of therapy to cope with the constant pain he lived with every day of his life.

He extended his methods into a performance art. A film was made of his life which he only agreed to take part in if it included the time of his death. It was filmed over several years. He died in 1996 and the film was released in 1997 winning a prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Bob also featured in the video for Nine Inch Nails' "Happiness in Slavery"....
