Do you think SEEDA have been told it's a Yes and therefore they have agreed to this grant? Because to have a government agency give a grant and another government department turn down the planning for the same project...well it would look a bit daft...

Or am I reading things wrong here?

Wow - good news, I wonder what FDC and LDC are thinking? Cue barrage of claims over Government plots / decisions made behind closed doors / unfair/ etc etc.

I wouldn't like to speculate, for fear of provoking a reaction from Jonny Byrnes Ego, who is, of course, THE expert about how government works.

I think both your points are covered by the caviat(s) on the granting of planning permission by the SSCLG contained within the SEEDA announcement - see relevant para's below:

This significant investment from SEEDA will play an integral role in the transformation of the City's Convention Centre into a world class venue as part of a major retail development, and will provide funding for the transport infrastructure necessary to enable the Community Stadium in East Brighton to be built, should it be granted planning permission by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

Pam Alexander, SEEDA's Chief Executive explained:
............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
"Our support for the Community Stadium in East Brighton, subject to planning decisions, will not only have significant benefits for the local community in terms of infrastructure but will also help to open up other opportunities for investment which will themselves generate further jobs in an area of serious disadvantage, and a gateway to Brighton and Hove. The Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership has been instrumental in bringing together support for these projects across the City."

29 posts so far ... and no-one's suggested we should be using the £5.3 million to replace Alex Bertin.

I'm disappointed.

Isn't the dosh for the 'construction of transport infrastructure to enable the EBCC stadium to be built'? It sounds a lot to replace a bus driver though, even a French one.

I'm sure that it's not relevant, but did anyone else notice that there wasn't a single mention of the word "Falmer" in the whole report, just East Brighton...

???

I only scanned the release, but did note that Falmer was not mentioned. Why would the Development Agency specfically mention EAST BRIGHTON.
A little clarification is called for.

Maybe the clue is in Martin Perry's quote in the Argus? -

Martin Perry, the chief executive of the football club, said: "Not only is it a huge boost for stadium project but also for the community.

"Albion fans everywhere should be delighted because it is a vital part of the stadium's funding.

"We have been working on the bid with SEEDA for a year and all that hard work has come to fruition".

Now how many people are still going to be grumbling about Perry and Knight? Securing a £5.3m investment from a Government agency is a significant achievement.

It's all coming together now, Falmer's on its way. :falmer:
