A decision made purely to appease the Tory backbenchers in an attempt to keep Johnson as PM, absolutely nothing to do with the science.

Spot on.

Only a stupid c*nt would stop encouraging the wearing of masks at a time when we still have 90k new infections and over 200 deaths a day. I have said it before I just find it unbelievable that people still support Boris .

Johnson yet again putting what he thinks will be a popular decision to save his neck before the health of the nation.
He didn't care then and he doesn't care now.
The man has no shame or integrity.
I will be making my own rules up as I have all along and my mask is staying on in crowded places or other people's homes.

Personally I am glad all the restrictions have been lifted. We have had numerous and often excessive, damaging restrictions and appear to have weathered any severe, to the point of meltdown pressure on the NHS. Those restrictions have also not prevented the virus infecting practically the whole country.

Gov figures only last week suggested that up to 97.5% potentially have antibodies so what is the point of any restrictions now?

For the first time since this all kicked off I think Boris is right (but he's still a knob and I hope he gets sacked).

I'd still rather listen to the scientists who may well agree.

Unfortunately they weren't invited today because the focus of the Covid presentation was about the PM saving his job.

Are you for real or just fishing?

average of 245 deaths per day over the last 7 days

18000 in hospital who are the reason why the NHS is in meltdown in some places i.e. hospital declared closed for new treatment (not just COVID) and more importantly 6 million people not receiving treatment some of it to deal with life threatening issues.

How is wearing a mask a damaging restriction .

Learning to live with it doesn't mean ignoring it it means making appropriate adjustments , agree no lockdowns but masks and vaccinations and testing certainly need to be continued .

The Pm's job is history. But I would assume he has passed on their advice.

You assume.

Unfortunately the last few days have seen the Government in abject panic.

I say the Government, but mostly a number of very young social media obsessed special advisors who have unfortunately convinced themselves they must be brilliant to be employed by the Government without the self realisation that the Government employed them in the first place.

Morons tend to employed by morons, but I digress.

Most of the press have focused on the parties (obviously), but so much bullshit has been released to distract attention over the last few days, it's difficult to keep track.

Wave machines and sonic booms in the channel, offshore processing of refugees by Ghana (embarrassingly denied by Ghana), license fee policy announced on twitter (with a link to a Daily Mail story - really ?), friendly press recycling stories about Starmer eating his dinner, no more masks.

The lack of scientists at the briefing today was everything about appeasing the bat shit crazy looney fringe who have already complained about their presence because they aren't "elected".

Project Save Big Dog.

You bought it sunshine. Hook, line and sinker.

Yes I'm for real. The death levels were over 1000 per day with less than half the infections back in the day. The NHS is not in meltdown (anymore than it was before covid). If it was even close we would be in lockdown again.

Do you not think that the lifting of these restrictions might actually help the NHS to start reducing the backlog of cases?

Do you seriously think that the wearing of face masks reduces infections? Because it really hasn't.

Really? In the context of my post your response is meaningless buy hey ho.

The fact is "Sunshine", we have to move on and the lifting of restrictions is the signal to move on, whether you and the rest of the other Johnson haters like it or not. It's not about Johnson or the Tories, it's about returning to a pre March 2020 normality, which everybody, regardless of political affiliation, desires.

You can carry on berating Johnson et al on a football forum for ever and a day. It won't make a blind bit of difference.

Just to give this some perspective, I am currently in Peru, which is experiencing a surge in Covid cases. The goverments response has been severe. Face masks are mandatory outdoors, anybody without one is fined. You need to have TWO facemasks on when entering any shop, cafe, supermarket etc, and everybody has to show proof of vaccination, in addition foreigners are obliged to show their passport to get into many establishments. There is near 100% compliance. There was though a noisy demo of about 20 mothers today in the main square here in Lima, protesting about their children having to be vaccinated, they were largely ignored, except by the riot police who shadowed them as made their way across the square.

Probably the dumbest thing I have ever read.

How exactly do you know wearing masks does NOT reduce infections?

The recent announcement is a blatantly political decision designed to bolster the PM as he thrashes around in search of something positive to rescue his doomed premiership.

The current covid news is looking positive and I was expecting these measures to be gone around March/April time as we let the current Fall in cases/admissions play out whilst we complete the vacc/booster roll out. I do not see why we could not wait another couple of months. The current restrictions barely impact me at all. Mask wearing in shops and on public transport has become second nature. I can still visit the pub, go to gigs, go to games and go on holiday. I have no idea what those clamouring for a premature end to Plan B are moaning about.

Again, watching this all from abroad and seeing people in the UK talking as if this is all over when 359 people died just yesterday is insane.

Yes they do. And maybe it hasn't helped much in the UK, but that's because people have been so half arsed about it.

Too early.

There are promising signs that the end is getting near, but we're not there yet.

Waiting another couple of months would make infinitely more sense, and wouldn't have been a major imposition.

A rushed populist decision, made purely as a distraction and attempt to paint Boris as a 'winner' who 'gets it done'.

Is this Boris doing what he thinks we are all calling for so going for the populist vote? As another deflection tactic? Love me please? Personally face masks and Covid passes make living with Covid more comfortable. I'll carry on wearing masks regardless and Covid passes are no inconvenience to me. I wish both were continuing, but realise the reality that I'm probably in the minority. What do you think?

It’s probably too early, but it saves Boris’s bacon. I think the vaccines have done their job in dealing with the brunt of omicron.

I reckon there may be an increase in transmissions but not enough to scare anyone as we’ve been aneatheatised to hospitalisations and pressures on the NHS etc. We (and especially - but not all - young men) just don’t care about those things because we can’t feel how it affects us, until it does.

I’ll keep wearing mine for a few weeks more, but as I’m wearing it to protect other people then I don’t mind doing this. Issue is too many people wear them as they think it’s to protect them.

Boris is going to ride this all out, and it will make it harder to get rid of the liar and embolden him to be more outrageous. He’s never been held to account in his life and he’s in charge of our country. Hideous man.

Indeed plan B was hardly anything, life as normal.

But thanks to the government public spaces will be a lot less safe from next week, for Johnson its all about saving his own skin, he doesn't care about us. It will always be just about him

Take care everyone, this ain't over
