I genuinely think we will also get Baleba. IMHO Gilmour and Dahoud are fighting it out for one position. Gross and Milner are kind of fighting it for another (essentially the utility player) but it makes sense to have two more for the 6 role. That way we have six players for the two central midfield roles plus RB, RB cover, LB cover.
We've already seen in the two games that RDZ plans to rotate pretty aggressively..and also how important the bench will be this season (both in terms of additional games and additional minutes In those games).
Alzate out. Ayari out on loan.
I would also like to think that. Baleba seems to be a physically strong DM, fast and able to break up play. Ideal as the Moises replacement.
Diaz seems more of a playmaker like DM role. I wonder whether we are pursuing him simply as we see him as being a talent that we need to go for as we have the spare cash to get him in, and we need to act now whilst the likes of Barcelona don’t seem able to move for him, presumably due to finances.
Who knows.
Would love both.

Why?

Alzate and ayari are current in the squad. They will drop out.
And neither of these fellas are going to get any football if they do stay it seems.

I get the point we'll have more games, so we'll need the squad, we'll need to use the bench more etc. But as things stand Beleba or Diaz would be coming in as a 4th choice CM at best. I personally don't see the point of bringing in a 5th choice, if we only play 2 in that position. This is especially this discounts Milner or Lallana playing there if we're unlucky with injuries.

Personally i'd class left back cover as more of a priority

The other thing is about striking while the irons hot. I think we are all feeling very optimistic about our chances this year but our profile has never been higher and that might not always be the case. The players we are targeting this summer feel slightly higher profile. If we can sign them at the right price now it makes a lot of sense to do that.

Looks to be very much our kind of player, although Vickery's comment on him lacking physically for the Premier League is a bit of a concern.
I wouldn’t worry, Although Vickery was positive about Caicedo from day one, he wasn’t convinced about Enciso, who obviously has come good in our set up, appreciating he wasn’t quite there when he joined.

Indeed. He had the cheek to compare him to Billy Arce! Looking back, I suspect Vickery didn't know anything about Enciso so was hedging his bets

Vickery knows his South American football onions but how much of the Paraguayan league was he watching?

Sounds more like a Mac Allister replacement than a Caicedo replacement but a good prospect nonetheless. You would assume we are still going for a Caicedo replacement.

Just from looking at the video, most of the clips when he picks up the ball, he's only 5 yards ahead of his back 4. Looks like a specialist defensive midfielder to me (though I admit, from the very limited evidence of a highlights reel)

Tim Vickery's verdict

"….. He’s a player who might struggling physically with the Premier League, he’s not the greatest defensively……….."

I really not sure why we’d need him in that case? Totally different to Caicedo.

We’ve got Groß, Gilmour, Dahoud, Alzate and Lallana who can do the deep lying, quick passing playmaker role.

We also have two highly rated Polish midfielders and Ayari on our books who might be able to do this role too. He does not sound like a defensive midfielder in the traditional sense at all.

If we sign him, maybe a loan to begin with?

But, Baleba looks exactly right for us. A physical monster and destroyer of play who can pass to a good standard.

Vickery isn't the oracle. Nice guy who knows his stuff but I'm not sure him suggesting Diaz isn't physically strong enough means much. Mac hardly was either but became an absolute monster at winning the ball back quickly.
This kid is Uruguayan. They're hard as nails.

But what if Diaz is a bit better than what we have got? We didn't need Enciso when we signed him.

There's talk that Alzate might be sold / loaned this season. And Ayari might be loaned. We have one Polish midfielder (Koslowski - already loaned) and another one (Moder) who looks months away from returning.
In this interview here Barber argues that their strategy is to buy players before they need them but it doesn't always happen.
