I didn’t see any arguments going on but have toned down my opening remark - as it happens we were at cross purposes so thanks for pointing that out.

The stats are from - 2021/22 not 2022/23 - ( nor what is now ‘last season’ which I’m still getting my head round, 2023/24) so I stand corrected

Not sure your definition clarifies anything re. The Premier League article that I quoted though as it uses your b/ definition 🙂

“With an increase of 2.2 per cent from last season, an impressive 15.3 per cent of all goals scored this campaign “ have come from corners.”

Maybe the writer should have said 15% of corners led to goals.*

Thank you for posting ( and working out) the percentage stats for last season - that is really helpful and interesting.

* Edited my earlier post to clarify.
The writer should not have said 15% of corners led to goals, because they didn't.

“With an increase of 2.2 per cent from last season....

Any other nerds think "I bet they meant percentage points there, not per cent"? I find it hard to take any article about data or stats seriously if they get this wrong.
(I know those aren't your words Zeb, just quoting you because they appeared in your post)

Edit: Hm, numbers-wise that's a very confusingly written article. It's making comparisons between seasons without providing the comparators. There's no way to tell if that increase has been accurately calculated because they don't tell us the actual number from "last season" as written. Writing about numbers is hard, tbf.
But we do know that the "last season" number has to be lower than the record 151. And we do know that the forecast total when that was written was 166. And I don't even need to do any maths to see that the difference between those numbers is closer to 10%, not 2.2%. But I'm getting into the weeds here, I'd better stop for my own sanity's sake.

The writer should not have said 15% of corners led to goals, because they didn't.
But according to @Bozza’s description 15% of goals didn’t “come from corners” either. That was the cause of the original cross purpose.

So how do you think the writer should have termed the “15% of goals from corners” in order to avoid confusion with this description below? Should he have said “corners that resulted in a goal”? if so, what’s the difference between that and me saying “corners that ‘led’ to a goal?

Btw - that was a tongue in cheek remark on my part - I know they are separate things but Jonny was talking about 35% of goals in the Premier League coming from set pieces which is why I provided the 15% stat coming from corners. The post above mine questioned Jonny’s stats but referred to a completely different stat ie corners that resulted in goals - which is why I corrected it. Bozza coming in confused things.

1. How many corners result in goals.
2. How many goals come from corners.

It's possible for "2% of goals come from corners

I am not bothered with whether you say led to, produced, resulted in, or returned, the percentage figure is wrong.
3-4% of corners lead to a goal not 15%.
But maybe 15% of goals come from corners.
Bozza got it the wrong way round, but his point was that corners that lead to goals is a different thing than goals that come from corners, with differing percentages.

I think you are misunderstanding my posts but I’ll leave it there. I said 15% of goals come from corners in the first place! The percentage the Premier League article referred to was correct as Bozza confirmed. ( 15%)

I understood exactly what @Bozza meant - the point is that I was responding to Jonnie while Gaz was talking at cross purposes which Bozza pointed out.

You can leave it there, but you said "Maybe the writer should have said 15% of corners led to goals" I just said the writer shouldn't, because 15% of corners do not lead to goals.

Is it just me who didn't think that anybody meant or wrote that "15% of corners lead to goals", until Bozza suggested it?

And I still don't think anybody, including the article posted, ever suggested it or thought that was the case. :lolol:
Not just you. Bozza just got it back to front, the silly back to front.

Don’t know but I for one am looking forward to actually understanding what the manager is really saying for the first time in 18 or so months of weekly pressers, instead of relying on the psychic abilities of fellow NSCers
