Oh dear. There are a few people making a bit of a fool of themselves. Romany Gypsies are a completely separate group recognised as an actual ethnic group.

The word Pikey has been used for centuries and only recently changed to be derogatory against Irish travellers etc. Therefore the original word Pikey has nothing to do with it. I suggest you research slightly better.

Oh dear.

I think you'll find that referring to the ethnic or national origin of travellers, whether Romany or Irish, crosses the line where the targets of the abuse are protected by anti-discrimination law.

Talk about clutching at straws. How many Brighton fans, when calling Palace fans pikeys consider to themselves "Now, I must get this right, am I branding them Romany Gypsies or Irish Travellers?"

Can you please elaborate?

When husty quoted only half of my post I was referring to the way Yid was being used by the away supporters in the video attached to this thread. I specifically made mention to the video in the thread. They are clearly linking the word Yid to the Gas Chamber.

The word Pikey has no direct link to people being Gased. When sung/ said (wrongly or rightly) is it not in anyway way linked to mass murder.

So my comparison was the word Yid is clearly being used in a anti semitic way and Pikey is clearly not.

read my reply to Buzzer. At least he can make a point in a sensible way. Unlike you who don't seem to be able to realise that one word is clearly linked to mass murder and the other not.

You're getting yourself in a right old pickle here. So 'Yid' is not OK because they were mass murdered, but 'Pikey' is, because they weren't? (they were).

Has anyone thought to ask the Jews what they think, or are we getting offended on their behalf?

Still think you are missing the point!! Let me help you because your reading skills arent the best. This thread is about the word Yid being used at football matches. The video on this thread clearly shows Yid being used in a anti semitic way. I have not once said that using the word Pikey is ok, and in fact i don't use it. The word Pikey when used doesnt get added onto songs about being marched to gas chambers.

So if you could point out to me where i said using Pikey was ok? and also point out what pikey songs include mentioning the gas chamber?

Understand now? and for the record I do come from a Jewish family.

So actually, in answer to my original question of:

I'm assuming you agree that we should not be allowed to call Palace fans pikeys or similar ever again?

Your answer should have been "Yes, I do agree" instead of huffing and puffing your way through some technicality about which particular type of traveller the word referred to. In which case, you're probably watching the wrong sport, because that side of football is not going to change, and nor do the vast majority of football fans want it to.

You can't create a rule that outlaws a word to describe a group of people based on how persecuted they've been in the past. Who decides when the persecution has been severe enough to outlaw the word at football matches?

You say you "come from a Jewish family", but I could say I come from a Christian family. Are you actually Jewish?

The word is used in context to Palace fans being Chavs.

The original point of the thread was about Spurs fans not being allowed to use the word that they refer to themselves as. That is a whole different kettle of fish to people singing songs about sending them to concentration camps. I don't hear Spurs fans singing those songs. I doubt you'd find anyone on this thread who would argue those songs are acceptable.

Ledley King saying people used to chant the N word at him is a very, very different matter to thousands of Spurs fans calling themselves the Yid Army.

Same with all this homophobia stuff. Thousands of fans booing or collectively abusing an openly gay player would be homophobic, and completely unacceptable. Thousands of fans singing "We can see you holding hands" to a group of thousands of other fans, isn't.

What grounds are there for such a claim?

When I was growing up it was common parlance to refer to any disabled person as a "spastic" or "spas" and those words were also used to insult able bodied people. Since then I've grown up and realised its not clever nor big to hurl insults at others whether by using disparaging words or via the use of obscenities.

I've also learned that using words such as spastic, yid, ****** and pikey is not only offensive when directed at groups to whom the words originally referred to but are also just as offensive when used in a casual way as a general insult - possibly even more so - not for those who the insult is aimed at but for those for whom the word has real meaning.

Is it beyond the realms of possibility that football fans might also have grown up.

Read virtually any other football club's messageboard. There are the grounds for the claim.

Absolutely, categorically, 100% yes.

I accept that there are many, on most "fan" boards, that clamour for the right to throw out obscenities and insults as though they are sweeties - no evidence though that this relevant tiny number of individuals are representative of the millions who go to watch football.

I also believe that the vast majority of football fans have grown up ???
