FA ask Fifa for emergency loan reprieve

The Football Association will talk to Fifa this week about extending the emergency loan system which many lower league clubs believe is vital to their existence.

World governing body Fifa plans to end the system, which allows clubs to sign players outside of the two transfer windows, at the end of this season.

The FA hopes to persuade Fifa to extend emergency loans to the end of 2015-16.

Nearly 350 players have already been signed on emergency loan this season.




Only three of the 72 Football League clubs - Blackburn, Leeds and Reading - have not used the system so far.

The FA has put forward a motion to raise and discuss the issue at Fifa's Executive Committee(external) meeting, which begins in Zurich on Thursday.

It is hoped English clubs will be given an extra season to prepare for an eventual transfer system without emergency loans.

Fifa rejected a proposal to consider extending the emergency loan system on an ongoing basis at a previous meeting in December.

It is thought it wants to end the arrangement in favour of a standardised system across its members. Fifa refused to say why it wants to outlaw emergency loans when asked for clarification by BBC Sport this week.

I would be more than happy for the emergency loan system to be scrapped. I think the number of loan signings we've had this season is one of the reasons we have had such a bad season. While their at it, I think they should reduce the number of loanees allowed in a match day squad to 3.

In fact this is probably one of the only things that I can say that I agree with FIFA, I would actually go further and would like to see...

Ban loans for any player over the age of 21. Loans are to develop young players.
Ban emergency loans during the season (apart from summer and January) as 99% are not emergencies.
Only leaves half-season and season long loans.

Clubs will have to forward plan, and if there is an injury/suspension crisis, then that is what the Development Squad is there for.

I would go even further, ban loans once the season starts and the really big one - no transfers at all once the season kicks off. Make all clubs play the whole season with the squad they start with and stop clubs winning titles and promotions with players that are not theirs. By doing this clubs will haveto produce and promote players through their own setup to cover injuries and loss of form. Have a good look at the teams at the top of the Championship, the players doing the business for them are mostly on loan, remove them and we might see some different placings. It might also stop the P/L hoovering up all the promising young players for their reserve teams if the players knew they were not going to be playing onloan.

Ending the emergency loan system will stop those clubs in with a chance of promotion or the play offs bringing in players from a higher division to achieve that aim.

I'm with Fifa on this (even though it may hurt us), get your squad together and stop using other clubs players because you didn't build you squad well enough or suddenly realise you have a chance of promotion/relegation. Might even stop clubs stockpiling players, although I doubt it.
