Changing tyres under VSC, yellow or red flags needs to stop- most of the pundits have said so. It just benefits those nearest the pits when an incident happens and penalises those who aren’t, which is not fair racing. The outcome of too many races has been decided that way!

As I said in an earlier post I find F1 boring, but surely this was the sports chance to get people like me onboard. I watched bits today and was quite interested in how much strategy, ( pit stops, tyres etc) played a part.
The end though, probably means I am now convinced that my first opinion of F1 was correct, it’s only interesting when they crash.
It certainly isn’t a fair sport.

Yes only because his lead wasn’t enough ? But then his lead was taken away anyway - if they’d made the decision early enough I suspect he would have [emoji2375]

Lewis did ask, but the team said lead isn’t enough +’there are cars in the way don’t worry. Then they changed the rules

Had Max got to within a few seconds of LH, I can see the logic of the ‘let them race’ mentality because the crash and SC would genuinely have denied Max a racing opportunity to win the race. BUT in this instance, the ONLY chance Max has is a crash and a SC - this event hasn’t denied a racing end, it created it. The race director had absolutely no need to create a racing situation when one didn’t exist when he deployed the SC.

It's a sad state of affairs for F1 when Charlie Whiting, God rest his soul, is still a better option as race director than its current incumbent.

You’re missing the bit where Max went in the pits to get a fresh set of tyres to

I also popped out and missed the safety car deployment and came back with 3 laps left. I heard a quote that Mercedes didn't bring Hamilton in as he would have lost track position. But he was in front of Verstappen so why not Pit?

Did Hamilton miss the pit lane entry as the Safety Car was deployed, or did Mercedes not want to risk a problem with tyre changing?

I can understand not wanting to pit from the lead in the race, as any mistake/ stuck wheel etc could hand the lead to Max. BUT Verstappen did stop and had fresh tyres whereas Hamilton had very worn ones for the restart. That's only going to end one way, which it did.

If Lewis pitted you can bet your bottom dollar that Max would have stayed out, been first and RB would have expected regulations to be followed and because not enough time for all cars to unlap themselves and rejoin the chain of cars, race would finish behind SC and Max wins. Any other race in the season this is what would have happened.

At the time he had a healthy lead + back markers between him and Max. So there was only downside to changing tyres. Then when it was to late they changed what was going to happen

Again it seems bonkers. He shouldn’t be allowed to put stop and gain an advantage. Why not just say you can’t pit stop during the safety car bit?

It wasn’t just him that stopped and on both occasions, VSC and SC, Lewis was closer to the pits than Max.

Strategically it favoured Max though as Lewis was leading.

You have to allow pit stops during safety car periods where possible as often the cause, or a car involved in the cause, need to go into the pits, (punctures, new wing etc).

Surely there has to be some protocol in place for that control? Presumably they don't have control over the safety car to do what ever they fancy with it?

Think you have missed the point. When you are the lead car with a few laps to go on old tyres, if your gap to the car behind isn't big enough to pit and get out ahead, you CANNOT pit as the 2nd place car would just stay out and take the lead. As Max's tyres were not that old it would have been a huge gamble for Lewis to come in and give himself only 1 lap to retake the lead. Max had to take this gamble as he had nothing to lose and with Lewis' tyres being 50 laps old there would only be one result. Further to this, under normal circumstances the race wouldn't have restarted with a SC this close to the end.

Fairest was if they desperately wanted them to race (a man made situation given the gap prior to SC) would be to red flag, let both drivers put on new boots and have a 4 lap sprint for the title.

You can make exceptions to pit stops in the rules. Allowing an unaffected car to change to fresh tyres and manufacturing it, so he’s pushed up behind the leader who’s on ageing tyres, is simply not fair in racing terms. Embarrassing outcome frankly for all concerned.

Plenty of rules allow changes to car if a safety issue e.g. Some parts allowed to be changed in parc ferme if it's a safety issue. Could easily change the rule to say no pit stops unless it's a danger/safety issue

There is no way Lewis could pit. Even the tyres Max had on were only 9 laps old or so anyway, they got a free stop to put a Qualifying set on. I’m surprised people are even mentioning it as an option for Lewis - simple equation, if Lewis stops Max stays out or vice versa. Lewis misses out on a crazy set of rules and frankly the race should have finished behind the SC for what would have been a fair result to reflect the racing.

Mercedes have lodged an appeal against the original appeal.
Getting embarrassing now, its now a case of being a very bad loser.

I also thought Hamilton should have ceded his 1st position on the 1st lap after running of the circuit and taking a short cut.
But what do I know:lolol:
