Four tenths is quite a gap in F1

Bring the race on!

Red Bull prove the early hype is real, Mercedes are a country mile behind in performance. However the curse of the Red Bull second driver means he’s racing by himself so Mercedes may be able to put him under tactical pressure, and it will be interesting to see how Max handles being favourite this season, he’s prone to the odd mistake.
Great to see McClaren and Ferrari back in the mix.

Said on the similar thread started the other day that the best way for this season to pan out will be for Max and Red Bull to start a little ahead of Lewis and Mercedes as I would expect that car to developer further and faster than the Red Bull over the season. Essentially if at half-way Verstappen is ahead but Hamilton is starting to close the gap then it could be a special, special season.

So far, so good.

Also, good to see the rest of the field so close together. Keeps things interesting further down the pack.

Hamilton is a great driver, no doubt, but if he's up against another top driver with a car of similar quality it could be a really interesting season in F1 for a change.

Imagine how gutted Bottas would be if this is the season he betters Hamilton but still doesn't win the title.

I highly doubt it's a scenario that'll come to pass. He'd be better off thanking his lucky stars Mercedes don't treat their drivers in the same interchangeable way with their customer teams as Red Bull, else he'd have had a few tours round in the Williams of George Russell this afternoon.

A great opportunity to finally nail the "he's only winning because he has the best car" nonsense once and for all

For many of us he already did that in a McLaren and the 2018 Merc. :)

Fascinating season in prospect. Shame Perez messed up his tyre choice because we don't have a gauge of how good a performance from Verstappen that was against their other car. Hamilton was pretty consistently several tenths faster than Bottas, as was Verstappen over Perez, but not getting into Q3 for Perez really took away a judgement of the real pace Red Bull had over the Merc. and just how individually brilliant those couple of laps were from MV.

I would imagine if Perez was on the right set of tyres he would still be a few tenths slower than Verstappen. Perez’s race pace though has been constantly better than his qualifying performance, so hopefully he should give a good show tomorrow.

Seeing that Haas go skewing across the track in the background really was sickening, nowhere near the same ferocity as the Grosjean incident of course but brung back some horrible memories.
