What a cock up. Here's what now needs to happen.

Max must retain the title (though I don't like it).

This smacks of the ‘final whistle’ mentality where a football match result can never be changed despite how awful or wrong officiating decisions are (see West Brom away last season).

However, results of F1 races ARE changed in the stewards office reasonably regularly. The FIA broke two of their own rules. The right thing to do is annul the last lap. The race should have finished behind a safety car, Masi broke the FIA rules (twice) to stop this happening. It’s just WWE if the officials are allowed to make up the rules as they go along. The destination of the title should be irrelevant to the decision to fix the race result by correcting the error Masi made.

For next season, in race lobbying by the teams must stop. Communication should be one way. From FIA to team only.
All teams and drivers need to get together in a month and work out a set of rules. These rules must be rigorously adhered to even if it makes the race worse

I strongly agree with most of what you say, but not for Max to retain the title. (Nothing against Max, but the rules can't be changed mid race).

Mercedes chose NOT to pit Hamilton as he would lose track position, and there wasn't time to restart racing according to the rules. Masi then changed the rules.

Maybe best to award joint title to Max and Lewis, but I'm not sure that's possible.

I disagree. Horner put pressure on Massi to a) let the cars between MV and LH unlap themselves thus meaning MV was closer and b) let them race one lap knowing his boy had new tyres. LH was in no win situation. Had he pitted and gone on to new softs he would have lost track position and had the race then ended behind the SC, which was a big possibility, then he would have lost anyway.

Cannot see how they can only let those cars between MV and LH unlap and not the rest. That is unfair bias to the whims of Horner who knew it was his boys only chance.

Probably the only way to save face however they should give Lewis the win but no points so tied on points and tied on race wins.

Throw away the rule book and start again.

If they declared the race null and void Max wins the title based on race wins.

Really can't see them overturning it, it would be a PR disaster. I think they reject the appeal and Masi resigns immediately

If I'd seen this shortly after you wrote it, I'd have replied "yes, of course they do".

But it turns out I'd have been wrong with that response.

5Live's Jenny Gow went off to find out if Mercedes always have a barrister with them at a race, and came back to say that it is "highly unusual" for them to do that.

So, based on that, I'll answer: no.

And, of course, Red Bull are also "a multi million pound operation" and they didn't have a barrister with them today.

Edit: It's not surprising they have legal reinforcements today, of course, but that wasn't the point being debated.
