Can't tell the difference. By the time you get back to your seat it's probably warmed up to its original temperature anyway.

Mind you, I'm not really one to talk. I remember being told that you've not tasted Guinness until you've drunk it in Ireland. Couldn't taste the difference then either.

Perhaps 30 years of 'Uncle Sams' chilli burgers have beaten the sh*t out of my taste buds?

The Extra cold Guinness was brought about by the fact that the younger generation want cold beer and had they not followed suit in 15 - 20 years time when all the proper Guinness drinkers have passed on there would be nobody to drink Guinness. FACT.
Indeed, I'd heard that too. Isn't it also true that you can pull a pint quicker? I.e. you don't have to do a half, leave it and then do the other half (speeds up sales).

It IS funny seeing how drink tastes have changed. When I was a boy growing up in the sixties nearly all men drank draught stout or bitter, served mainly in thick, panelled glasses with handles. Lager was what you bought for your girlfiriend and it's an indisputable scientific FACT that you can trace Britain's demise (from beating Germany in WW2 to being unable to beat Iraq) directly to the fact that a lot of adult males now drink a beverage that was designed for women and poofs.

Walked past O'Neils at the top of Carnaby Street the other day and there was a sign out the front claiming to be the only chain in England to stock it or have it on draft or some such nonsense. Wasn't really paying attention as you are as about as likely to find me in a Treverspoons as you are one of their "pubs".

i worked in O'neills in Reading when i was a student. we were the first place to sell Red Guinness in England. we had it on 'trial' i don't think it ever caught on...

however i did feature on the BBC money show, which was about guinness and briefly looked at the Red stuff. being the only bar hand on that day i am seen pulling pints in the background.

The best things come to those who wait ..... if you get served "Extra Cold" by default and don't like it, wait until the temperature of the drink increases by 1 degree, and all is well. If you were impatient in teh first place you wouldn't have ordered Guinness.

Any idea why Smithwicks isn't available over in England? Maybe it is but I can't say i've ever seen it.

ONeills in Sutton has Smithwicks (Just discovered this a couple of weeks ago, lovely) They also do Guinness Red.

I think most ONeills do this now as I had Guinness Red in Kingston too.

They definitely have guiness extra cold in the factory in Dublin, I went there just after hey introduced it and was told it could be poured in one go as a result of it being cooler.

I hate it when you order Guinness and they take ages to give it to you cos they're waiting for the froth to settle then you end up standing at the bar for ages smiling politely and your hand's starting to f***ing stink cos you're holding money in your palm the whole time and I don't like that cos money is germy and BREATHE.

That its all brewed in Dublin now rather than having a UK brewery has made those claims fairly irrelevant now.

The best random 'reason' given for it apparently tasting different was "they use different Nitrogen in the UK". Doesn't take a chemistry graduate to realise the problem with that assertion!

Love the odd pint of xtra cold usually 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9:drink::drink::drink::drink::drink:
Best bet to avoid waiting is order two at the same time, then when you are just starting your second pint order two more, works for me.

i believe this is true, not sure if this or the make it easier drinking for young lager drinkers was the original driving force, im inclined to think its the pouring speed. I for one cant be arsed to wait and not convinced waiting 7.4 minutes really makes a difference (though pouring straight pint in one go definatly does).

if a pub is serving substandard Guiness (ie not looking after it so well) the cold will be preferable. its also quite nice in the summer. but normally i agree the regular is better though (fully aware it is exactly the same stuff) as it seems thats the right temperature for it.
