Experienced Championship strikers (realistic)

All this stuff about 'realistic targets' is a bit strange though isn't it.

If the same post had been made 12 montha ago and someone had said 'What about Vicente? He's 30 and been injured a lot but he could do a job', that person would have been carted off to the Lunatic Asylum.

I think we'll get a few surprises this summer as well.

Bearing in mind the title of this thread it could be argued that we sort of had 'experienced Championship strikers' in CMS plus loanees Paynter and Vokes for much of this season yet they did not exactly rip the division apart, allowing for the system that Gus plays of course. Would Simon Cox have done any better? - after all he hasn't been a regular at WBA, so is rather like Vokes.

Ideally we could be lucky and unearth a gem like Holt or Lambert from relative obscurity but suggest they are the exception. I don't think we are likely to take as a punt on a Jordan Rhodes type of player either. I'm not suggesting a complete clear out and am happy to persist with CMS and Barnes in the squad but suggest that if we are truly ambitious and are targetting automatic promotion next season we actually need to add experienced Premiership (not Championship) strikers like Jason Roberts or a Kevin Phillips. Kevin Doyle would be ok but would command silly money and realisically more likely to go to Saints (or back to Reading?) rather than want a whole season in the Championship. Yes we will have to pay the going rate but that is the price of success if you want to 'play with the big boys'. We don't need a superstar just someone to do a particular job. It would be good to get sorted in time for pre-season so we don't risk spending half a season playing catch up.

In reality we are going to be competing with the likes of Leicester who underperformed this year (shame) and their supposed big budgets plus the ex-Prem clubs with their parachute payments. I think TB has a reasonable budget available to match his ambitions but not be surprised if Gus has to look for better value further afield and might bring in one or two surprise names - perhaps from La Liga, especially if we secure a fit Vicente for another year.

I think there are plenty of goals in this team as it is, if it attacks ! Thus perhaps a midfield player of quality is most important to the squad. We have plenty of quantity in midfield at the moment but perhaps only two midfielders (Vicente (when fit) and Bridcutt) who can be relied upon to consistently perform at 'top of the table' level. I expect us only to be playing one up front for much of next season so do not see a real quality addition coming to partner CMS. It may be more an issue of whether the club could buy someone more proven and fund part of the purchase from a CMS transfer. Sensitive times ahead.
