You’re giving Roma too much credit and us not enough. They are not a much better team than us.

It is possible for us to beat them 4-0 like they did to us. Just very unlikely.

We were nowhere near our best on Thursday but play that game again and it could easily have been 2-2. We had plenty of chances. The difference was clinical finishing.

P.S. please don’t throw your toys out in response to this like you seem to with anyone who disagrees with you on here. Thanks!
Unfortunately shit happens, like the 83 Replay and Palace in 02 I doubt I will ever want to watch the highlights, we will never know what could have happened if RDZ had tinkered with his tactics or what a fit Pedro and Mitoma would have brought to the proceedings.

The bottom line is as a club we’ve overcome adversity on a number of occasions.

The romantic in me still believes if we were to score twice in the first half hour, a number of players were all to gel on the night, and as Mariah Carey once said ‘And a hero comes along’ then it could happen.

That said like the Sheffield Wed or Palace second legs it’s more likely we could all end up deeply disappointed just before 10pm, thinking what might have been for a different set of circumstances.

Why not believe that we can do it? It is, as you say unlikely but it's not over until it's over. From the examples posted it's possible! It's been fun whatever the outcome (aside from a few incidents).

I’m certainly not saying 100% we can’t score 5 goals - of course not. But my personal beliefs don’t stretch to the almost impossible. And yes, it is not over until it’s over which is why I want us to go out and fight as if we were still in this - I am absolutely sure RDZ will and put forward the best available lineup.

I also think, very much believe actually, a win is within our reach and would be a tremendous boost to the team and fans. We don’t need to knock Roma out to do that. I’m probably one of the few fans who can see how even a loss on Thursday can still be an amazing night of celebration at the end of a great campaign as well as give us a high of confidence to carry us forward in the rest of the EPL season.

.Brighton can be incredible when we play our best football, I believe we can take on the biggest teams and can beat anyone when we are really on our game, one of our main problems has been inconsistency - both during a match and over the course of a season

No one is throwing any toys out of the pram. I am ALSO just saying it is very unlikely - probably next to impossible- isnt that what everyone else is thinking?

Yes we created chances, Roma was vulnerable in defence at times but I disagree with your analysis of the level Roma are at as a team - they are Europa winners and runner ups, have far more experience than we do playing at this level of European knockout competition. Their overall game was better put together - and they were good finishing. Creating chances isn’t enough to put you on a par with an opponent the rest is important too.

I’m not being unnecessarily negative but realistic. I think we could pull off a win - but I will be utterly astonished if it will be enough to knock Roma out of the competition and get us into the last 8.

(Roberto said much the same thing about Roma’s level/this stage of the competition btw but perhaps you missed his post match interview?)

You’re basing a lot of your comparison on one match. Are Luton better than us too ?

We won our group beating teams with plenty of successful European experience.

I'll be happy if we put up a good fight. Which I think we will. Knowing us we'll win 3-0, but miss one shot by 2 centimetres that would've taken us to extra time & penalties (or whatever the EL rules are). :lolol:
It will be a good night and we will be staying to clap the team off no matter what happens because they're the one's that have given a load of lucky people the chance to go on a European tour.

It’s not comparable to us losing to Luton - a small, newly promoted club at the bottom of the EPL a team that beat us because we literally didn’t get off the bus and play - completely different teams on the day and different circumstances to losing to a team that have been Europa winners and runners up, one of the biggest Clubs in Italy, playing in Serie A for decades.

I don’t need to see two teams play against each other to say who is the better team. We have never played Bayern Munich or Inter Milan but I know they are better teams than us (as are most of the current Champions sides).

Without diminishing or belittling our group performance- Ajax are not the team they used to be. They were going through somewhat of a crisis, had dropped to 17th in the Eredivisie and had just sacked Maurice Steijn a few days before We are probably fairly evenly matched with Marseille. AEK have also lost form in recent years but arguably the ‘best’ team in the group but again, a similar level. That’s how the group stages work out but when it gets to the knockout stage, the level becomes higher of course.

Yeah me too. My sentiments entirely.

I think it will be a great night - I honestly don’t mind if we don’t win - I will be there right at the end cheering Tony Bloom, De Zerbi and the whole squad for an exciting foray into European football.

As a Barca fan probably nothing will ever beat that comeback against PSG. We were on the wrong side of the comebacks too ofc (Roma, Liverpool - in back to back years to make it worse).

From a neutral perspective this one was pretty impressive.

Deportivo lost away game 1-4 then won 4-0 at home against a very good AC Milan team in 2004.

Beat me to it. A 'very good' Milan side is putting it mildly.

Will be fascinating to see how we approach the tie on Thursday.

Do we adopt some level of pragmatism, play for pride and try to make the aggregate score respectable?

Or do we go for it, pile forward and risk getting battered again? (Assuming Roma see any need to cross the halfway line)?

Part of me thinks we may as well go for it, but being on the wrong end of a 6-0 or 7-1 aggregate score would be painful.

LOL I was told to fcuk off in not so many words by several posters on the match thread for saying we should field our best available team on Thursday and play to win. I had the piss taken out of me for saying everyone should turn up on Thursday and give our team support.

After Roma - I started a thread specifically as a positive response to all the negativity on NSC recently supporting what the Club is doing and where we are etc.

I maybe many things but killjoy isn’t one of them 👍

But 5:0 - yep chances ‘slim to Karen Carpenter’ and pigs might fly.
Its not that its impossible, nothing is in sport.

It's simply the fact that we are not in form and missing key players.

Lost 3 in a week conceding 8 and scoring 0, we then beat a poor forest team 1-0 with an OG and still struggling to finish them off.

So on the past 4 games performances to suggest we can suddenly score 4 more than Roma in 90 minutes is bordering on the ridiculous.

That said I'll be there with others just in case the 0.1% miracle was to happen, knowing it 99.9% won't!!

Well it should definitely be the latter, who cares the aggregate score, there is no GD its win or lose.

But right now we seem to have gone full Dale Stephens and are playing with too much pragmatism and going backwards

Indianapolis Colts 36-39 Minnesota Vikings (ft/ot)
I also refer you to the Lions vs Falcons at Wembley in 2014.....
Down 21-0 at HT & my Leos supporting mate wanted to go (we were sitting in front of a bunch of Scottish Atlanta fans who were REALLY sticking it to us, as the only Lions fan in the small section by the tunnel)
Last second FG for Detroit to win it 22-21 on the final play of the game. Cue mad celebrations from me and my mate, then turning around to find almost all the obnoxious Falcons fans had already slunk out! 😆

Brighton factually.....
Boxing Day game against Colchester (I think), in the Priestfield days
Yep went to that 3-0 down at half time, we got it back to 3-3 if memory serves me right only for them to 4-3 up more or less straight away, at that moment I truly felt sick of it all, travelling to Gillingham, getting back to 3-3 and then bang another nail

We can definitely scored 4 goals or more against Roma in 90 mins

We just probably can't them scoring a similar number at the other end.

Surely the one tactic, is balls out, death or glory, win the ball then charge up the pitch. We should play all the "matchwinner on their day, but their day doesn't come too often players" Fati springs to mind
