I'd struggle to view winning the tournament as the only way to define success.

With the players that we have, not winning a single tournament is failure. The only success for a team as good as this, is winning.

If we were that good, we wouldn't need to qualify every description of the side with "our attacking players are great"

Because Stones and Walker are shit? No, they're good too. Obviously we don't have the best 11 players to ever play, but no team ever has their best in one tournament. But we have more top players than most of us have ever seen.

If it's all about which players, substitutions etc how come that starting 11 played Serbia off the pitch first 20 ? The players are obviously capable so what happened ?

First 20, they put in the effort, closed down, pressed high, all those basic things that make teams good. (Still remember first time we played City at Amex, and being stunned how hard their 'top players' worked to close down, sprinting and closing everywhere).

And the commentators join in with how wonderful England players are, Pickford wonderful save from England's no 1, Captain marvellous Kane heading a shot over his own bar. WTF is going on when the Serbian attackers are getting that much room and we are standing off their midfielders letting them make those passes. Football is simple but very hard work. The Higher you go, the harder it is. International football is no different.

Even I'm capable of controlling a ball when there's nobody within 10 yards of me. (Well maybe 20 ). And I can still hear the commentators telling us how good the England team are, as I'm typing this

We'll win all 3 group games and reckon we'll thrash Slovenia
Indeed. We were average tonight. Some of the posts on this thread you would think we lost !!!

But at the end of the day, you can see as clear as day a Wiley big team like Spain or Italy will beat us in the quarters. Our only hope is to get lucky with pens with twatgate in charge.

Just imagine how good we could be if we played the way Nagelsmann's Germany played against the Jocks? Instead yet another wasted tournament with a manager who is completely out of his depth.
Deffo need to give head a wobble there pal

Some posters wow . Reflects society .instant gratification required . Unless it’s blowing my mind I will squeal like a bitch . Let’s face it , anything less than a 3-0 England and blistering football and same lot come out woodwork

We’ve opened with a win . Move on

You're much older than me, and I don't think this is the most talented XI England have had across the team I've seen.

In any case, once we reach the knockout stages you have to accept the most talented team might not win. That's the nature of football.

My gosh, give it a rest you anti-Southgate brigade. If we'd beaten them 4-0 you'd have all said "they'll get found out by a good team". It's tedious. Can we have another thread for you lot who don't even like England anyway?

Italy beat Albania by a goal. The Dutch beat Poland by a goal. Serbia are strong, physical and have excellent players like Vlahovic and Tadic. Kane would have made it 2 if not for a world-class save. Serbia had one good chance out of nothing, dealt by Pickford well.

We did a good job. 3 points. Job done.
:lolol:

A pint of what you’ve had please.

We may have had the odd comment like that from people who are never happy, but as it is, we're getting a lot of comments because that was quite a poor performance.

I think we should be better than Italy and the Netherlands.

Serbia are one of the poorest teams in the tournament. They finished second in their group to Hungary, losing both of their games against Hungary (who lost their opening game against Switzerland).

This game was what I expected from Southgate's England. it will boil down to whether Bellingham's individual brilliance can overcome Southgate's timidity and negativity.

Jude and the defence were excellent but my worry is Foden doesn't appear to have a clue what his role is in this England team, Kane barely touched the ball in the first half while Saka faded.

This is the toughest game in the group. Thought we’ve been set up well but some of the passing has been poor. Not sure that’s Southgate
Serbia ranked 33, Denmark with Hjollund and Eriksen free kicks ranked 21.

Even without rankings, I think Denmark will be a bigger test.

Agreed with the proviso that a) it was Scotland and b) they were down to 10 for a lot of it.

I think you’re right though. Germany were impressive from the off.

It seems odd the England team is packed with players who are used to quick, intricate interchanges high up the pitch yet we hardly try to play that way at all.

And, defensively, even in the first half we let Serbia get so many crosses in. Pretty much their only threat, yet very little attempt to stop it.

Not a convincing performance, and some pretty ordinary performances. But the 1-0 win is in the book, so on we go.
In my opinion we are not the overall winners, though.
