My season ticket neighbour was sure that if Marseille got through to the round of 16 then we can’t be drawn against them in that round only.

Mr Google provides the following:-

Format. In the round of 16, teams from the same country cannot be drawn against one another. Meanwhile, teams that have already faced each other in the group stage cannot be paired in the round of 16.14 Dec 2023

Maybe so, but their centre forward can't play against us. Mind you not sure if Sima could play for us against them either. Is he Cup tied for Rangers?
Sima could play for Rangers against us as UEFA don’t allow any clauses that could influence who plays for a team in any match. Last season for instance João Cancelo played in the Champions League quarter finals for Bayern Munich against Man City while he was on loan from City.

Equally if we recalled Sima we can play him in the Europa League as UEFA phased out the cup tied rule since the 2018-19 season. They now allow players to play for a different club in the group stage and the knock out stage.

We’d still be tied by the rules that only allow us to register 3 new players before the knock out stages start. We’ve already got Moder and Enciso who weren’t named in the squad for the group stage, so even if we recalled Sima he may not be able to play depending on who else we sign in the January window and who we wish to register.

The rule about clubs from the same group not facing each either in the last 16 only applies to the Champions League. As already mentioned in this thread USG and Union Berlin met in the group stage of last seasons Europa League and then faced each other again in the last 16. So we can face Marseille in our next game.

Thanks for an excellent, well researched reply.(y)

This is where we are now.

We can’t play another English team until the Quarter Final.

As has been pointed out, the other English teams won their group so they are seeded in the last 16 draw and we can’t play them anyway.

Yes, we could play Marseille again in the Last 16.

Yep - this is correct, because Marseille will have had to play another round to get to us again which negates the ‘playing someone from your own group’ straight away.

Apologies if this has already been asked elsewhere.....

IF we advance from our Round of 16 tie on 7th/14th March do we know whether we will be home or away in the first leg of a quarter-final on 11th April?
Or is it simply a case of what order the ball is taken out of the pot?

(I'm trying to do a bit of diary planning and need to know whether to keep the 10th and 12th April free as possible travel days, or to keep 17th and 19th April clear).

The draws from the quarter finals onwards are a free draw so no seeding, no priority for an away match first, and no restrictions on drawing a team from the same country .

Due to work this is the first tie I can travel to away in the Europa League . It’s gonna be West Ham isn’t it ?

So if we can't play another group winner, or an English team or a team from our group...there aren't many left surely 😁

I'm exactly the same as you in terms of EL away opportunities. If it is West Ham, let's hope they don't put in too much effort like they did last night -- but we get that all-important first goal that forces them to change their approach.

It’s any of the 8 non-seeded teams that get through isn’t it ?

Yes.
The 8 Group winners are seeded, and don't play the playoff round.

They (We) will each play one of the teams that win their playoff game.

Of course it is . . . More tea?

Rangers would be great . . . Have we ever played in Scotland before? Competitively not Shirley? Personally I get on with the language better in France 😂
I think a lot of the Rangers groupies on here would change their tune if we do draw them and Brighton is invaded by a hun-horde waving their Union flags while
pissing in our streets...

Those rules are for last 16 games in the Champions League only.

The Europa League and Conference League last 16 draw will see Group Winners drawn against the teams that win the play off round.

The only restriction is teams from the same country cannot play each other (doesn’t effect us as West Ham and Liverpool are also group winners and there are no English clubs in the play off round).
