Separating out the commentary from the punditry - in the case of the former, they all seem to want to make statements and express opinions instead of just commentating on the match being played.

The pundits at least offer variety and choice pre and post-match and at half time. Pre and post match I generally choose to do a bit of housework or get supper ready. At half time I always choose to make a cup of tea. Job done!

I've never been a fan of Jonathan Pearce. The guy would send a audience to sleep, the amount of Statistics he has to shove into every single game. He has to commentate on.

BBC commentators are not great but Tylesdley and Drury are just awful. I really miss the Sky commentators, they are in a different league.

Lineker is ok as a presenter, Chiles is just a twat.

I have more of an issue with the ex player pundits/summarisers though. Their lack of knowledge about players and teams outside of the Premier League astounds me. If they're being paid to be experts on these games then they really should be. They're also not funny no matter how hard they try (Shearer) and most of them are incredibly dull.

The only guest I have enjoyed is Roberto Martinez, the rest crap.

I want a commentator/sidekick to add something to my football-watching-experience, and I want them both to have that elusive 'chemistry'.

I'd like a few fun stats, a not-obviously-pre-prepared intro as kick off takes place, honesty and as little hype as possible. This obviously disqualifies much of ITV's output, but Peter Drury is good as he sounds as if he works for the BBC. J Pearce I like, as he reminds me of the great Barry Davies, and he's learned to speak only really when necessary.

Mick McCarthy has been excellent ("give it some violence"), applauding and castigating where necessary. Lawro gently amuses me, plus it seems as if everyone gets on with him. And he's been there done that, which I admire.

It really is a personal choice isn't it. Probably all psychologically linked to our childhood-based wants in authority figures, teachers, parents and the like.

On the whole I prefer the radio commentators.

Jonathan Pearce on TV is very irritating and how on earth Mark Bright is worthy of being an expert summariser is beyond me, he is only there for his cock ups.

IMHO the presentation of international footie on telly peaked around the time of Italia '90 - you couldn't beat the whole thing being effortlessly steered by the suave Des 'ding dong' Lynam to the soundtrack of Nessun Dorma, sheer class. The standard of presenter has never really approached that standard since.

I hope that Martin Keown and David James get a lot more air time as pundits 'cos they generally talk a lot of sense. I like Martinez and Seedorf but for goodness sake its time to move on from Hansen and Lawro. Plus Southgate could talk a brick to sleep.
