I'm a numpty when it comes to such stuff, so looking to the knowledgeable folk on NSC.

I have run a 30m ethernet cable up to a new cabin installed at the end of the garden, I will be plugging it in to a Netgear Powerline wifi booster.

The cable I have run has the large sized clips that you'd use in the office, but the router and Netgear have the smaller gigabit port. Is there such a thing as a converter or connector? or have I royally screwed up

Thanks

Cat 5, 5e and 6 generally have RJ-45 connectors which are universal, Sounds like you may have fibre connectors or something proprietary. Any pictures or model numbers?

Sounds as though you are trying to connect to the RJ11 (US telephone style jack) port at the back of the router. If you share some photos someone we will be better to understand your issue.

The Powerline wouldn't have an RJ11 port.

Do you actually need the Netgear Powerline wifi booster? Why would you need to boost the wi-fi in your cabin if you're running an ethernet cable to it (presumably directly from your router)?

Surely, a wi-fi booster won't help in your cabin, because you're using a cable, i.e. it is wired as opposed to wireless?

Apologies if I've misunderstood.

It will depend on what devices are going to be used. Tablets etc will still need Wi-Fi so some sort of wireless access point will still be needed for the cabin as it’s highly unlikely they’ll be able to connect to the router 30 metres away.

Ah, I see, yes. I was just thinking of using a laptop on the end of the cable !

Weird that this thread should arise as i have just bought a new ethernet cable as something is clearly wrong with our internet..........I am probably way off the mark but thought I might maximise our Pc speed. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00QV1F...Code=ogi&th=1&ascsubtag=06-3671060-05-3671085

Broadband speed drives me nuts!

Sky technician say our inconsistent speed is down to having xboxs, tablets etc on it.

So I have just done a speed test through ookla and our download speed is currently 2mbps.....fecking 2......we should be at 30mbps.

I asked the kids to come off all their devices to run it again and it's still 2mbps.

Is this Sky BS or wholesale BS or something else that they could not work out?

We have never had a great speed but it was consistent ish around 26mbps.

Should I be banging a few heads???

Have you got dial tone on the landline ?
If the line has a disconnection on one leg, BB will still work at a much reduced speed but you'll not get dial tone as there isn't a DC path.

Thanks, we do still have a dial tone.

What else could sap our speed, everyone, on porn sites in Chichester???

This is typical of the speed we are currently getting.

The name gives it away
Just a thought but have you tried turning all devices off and then rebooting the router. Over the years I have found that an occasional reboot clears a lot of crud out of its memory.

No I haven't yet, I turned off quite a few to see if it would make a difference but nothing. I will try this later as I have to go out.

The sky engineer reckons that bt open reach (I think) said we had a consistent 30mbps going to our house for the past 2 weeks when they tested the line.

That is way off of the speeds we have been getting.

That said I have a couple of unknown devices logged on....how do you find out what these are?

* sorry OP I am not meaning to nobble your thread.

When you run your BBand speed tester, don’t do it through Wi-Fi…….get your lap top and disable Wi-Fi….plug in a cat 5 from your lap top directly into the router…..run the broadband speed tester programme again and that will give you an 100% accurate as Wi-Fi will degrade the speed.

Go into the router and find the devices MAC address, it'll be in the format XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
Then go to https://www.wireshark.org/tools/oui-lookup.html and put them in there. That will tell you the device vendor (you only need the first half really)

Also, after reboting everything, turn off wireless, connect a PC with an ethernet cable and run another speed test.

Another thing it could be is a neighbour has got a new router and it's on the same channel as yours so try changing the channel your router is using.

I am with BT I reported my internet as slow and they identified a problem and fixed it without telling me the details. I think it had become unsynchronized.
