250 plus seems to be a reasonable figure when compared to other campaigns on the councils website. I am sure you can watch the debates live online as well as I remember watching a few of the Amex discussions.

Brighton Hove City Council - Current ePetitions

I have read the North Laine one half a dozen times and still have no clue as to what they want/dont want?

It's the Brighton Society - it's anyone's guess.

From the title of the appallingly worded petition, I think they want the nameplate for 'North Street Laine' to change to the correct spelling of 'North Street Lane'.

Okay, that was one of my theorys, it seemed very particular, I liked reading the definition of Laine, perhaps it should be renamed 'Bond Street Lane side of Laines'

I signed it. That will carry some weight. But I am running 4 miles every other day!

Well in the case of North Laine 'Laine' means an open area of land or holding not narrow thoroughfare. Hope this helps.

A great example for the need for a cycle lane last night as two girl cyclists, cycling towards Falmer from Woodingdean, caused a tailback of traffic for about 20 minutes.
The special buses from Rottingdean to the game were caught up in this.
Anyone not signed this petiton yet please do so.

There are quite a few cyclists who choose to ignore designated cycle lanes or paths and still use the road so it won't stop this from happening.

But then they go on to talk about how Laine is a uniquely Brighton thing and its need to be preserved... which changing Laine to Lane wouldn't exactly achieve?

We the undersigned petition the council to revisit the 1981 decision of the Highways and Transport Committee from which this misapplication of "laine" originated and rectify the situation without delay. The use of "laine" in this nameplate is incorrect and misleading.

The word "laine" is of anglo-saxon origin meaning "loan" or "lease" and was the Sussex dialect term for the open arable fields of the feudal system of agriculture. Its use has survived uniquely in Brighton to the present day and its correct application should be jealously guarded as part of Brighton's history and unique character.

They don't want to lose the notion of 'laine', they just don't want it used wrongly. It does seems fairly stroppily worded. It's only been 30 years since the sign was put up, mind...

I've no idea what Timmy's post (No.68) was about, though.

It was just to explain, that Laine in local terms does in fact mean open area of land although not distinctly 'field' and certainly not narrow thoroughfare i.e 'lane'

Many people think the North Laine is in fact 'The North Laines', wrongly assuming the close knit collection of street's Kensington Gardens , Sydney Street etc are in fact being described as the plural of Lane (Laines)

I have even heard the Lanes 'Meeting House etc refered to as the South Lanes, this is of course quite wrong.

The lanes area of Brighton is mainly consists of Meeting House Lane bordered by Prince Albert Street , Nile Street and Ship Street. The North Laine is the area bordered by Queens Road, York Place, North Street and Trafalgar Street.

Laine is indeed a unique Brighton word but must always be associated with its ancient meaning.
