Years ago, my grandmother was telling me once about this English singer she'd seen on the telly who was very popular in Germany. About how he'd had a whole programme to himself and how she could have watched it all day, it was so good and how he'd created a lovely atmosphere and seemed such a nice man too. But she couldn't remember his name.

Fast forward a few years and I'm standing on a freezing cold terrace watching Duisburg being thrashed by Hanover Sechsundneunzig - to the name of which their fans were singing a cheesy 70s-sounding song with clapping and some na-na-nas in the middle.

This all left me certain that the most popular English singer in Germany since Kevin Keegan left Hamburg is undoubtedly Sheffield's own TONY CHRISTIE.

I know, since that fat northerner got involved he's now a bit better known again here as well. But they never lost the faith.

I can't see him as a complete unknown. He's been the lead item on BBC Sport a few times in the past week and he's currently third favourite in the betting for Sports Personality of the Year.

True, but before last week you'd have to agree only Le Tour fans would have known who he was, and he'd have been nowhere in the SPOTY betting

I believe ex-Family singer Roger Chapman buggered off to Germany around 1980, and has continued to release big selling albums over there, which have been ignored/unreleased in the UK.

Terry paine wasn't just a member of the squad he played in at least one of the games.

He was a good player too - even if he did play for the hated Southampton. A stroppy little sod though.

Yes, I guess that few people over here would recognise him now.

To be fair, being big in Germany isn't NECESSARILY a good sign.

I accidentally flipped over to German TV not that long ago and The Rubettes were playing a gig on a Saturday evening primetime show...

I'm more than happy to trust the UK market on this one - if no record company will take a punt and release them in the UK, they must be shite. I would think, with the above example of Tony Christie and the oft-quoted case of Hasselhoff, being musically big in Germany is almost certainly a bad sign.
