Thread's a bit old, but it'll do :)

Wheeler Street have an album out, it's jolly good. They're doing a gig in Shoreham at the Ropetackle Arts Centre on 6th March, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes lively folk music of an evening :)

Anyone remember Albert Richardson who sang "The Old Sow" ?

He was known locally as Laddie

My dad used to take him down to the Goldstone.

By the seaside in West Somerset
Hello,

I hope it's okay for me to post here, I'm not Kneon Light, I'm his wife.

Anyway, individual tracks you might like (I do) available on emusic, itunes etc:
"London Town" by Bellowhead
"Rolling Sea" by Eliza Carthy
"All You Pretty Girls" by Jim Moray
"Dog & Gun" by Bella Hardy
"Kitty Jay" off Seth Lakeman's earlier album
"Grey Galito" by Salsa Celtica
"The Murder of Maria Marten" by Shirley Collins (a Sussex lady I believe) & The Albion Country Band (an auspicious name :))

An acquired taste if you're new to folk music, but well worth it, is Martin Carthy's first album "Martin Carthy"

I'd recommend Bellowhead. Their new album might be hard to get into, but their first album "Burlesque" is a masterpiece. See them live if you can.

A rather excellent newish band from Maidstone is Wheeler Street. Look for them on youtube, or check out "Child Owlet" off their myspace page, or listen to "worst woman" from their webpage Wheeler Street or go to a gig. They're great fun live.

Shirley is indeed from East Sussex and her individual work and collaborations with her sister Dolly and The Albion Country Band are well worth a listen for folk and/or world music lovers

The nearest I ever got to folk was Jethro Tull.

Seth Lakeman is very good, I agree; if you enjoy his music, try a listen to Xavier Rudd as well. For accessible folk, why not check out Fairport Convention? They've been around for yonks, I know, but they're still good - and their old stuff still sounds as good as ever.
There's a Scottish band worth checking out - the sadly now disbanded Wolfstone (NOT the Wolf Tones - that's something different altogether). If there's a 'Best of Wolfstone' compilation out there, it would be worth a listen. The Oyster Band are great, and what about Brighton's own, The Levellers?
The Imagined Village sounds very interesting - I'm going to try and find a copy.......

This is a classic folk album.

Standing in the way of control
I'll have to take a couple of hours out of my massive life and go through this thread properly, nice one.

Poor Man's Heaven was a bit of a sellout but Kitty Jay was excellent. Lakeman's amazing live. Noah and the Whale are the new Nizlopi, they are twee to the power of ten and will be forgotten by the end of the year. Imagined Village is sweet. Listened to a load of Iron and Wine the other day, all a bit too hush hush for me but I'm sure true folkies would love it.

I've been dipping my toes into the folk scene. Wasn't too impressed with Bellowhead's new album. Really liked Seth Lakemen but felt he could do more. To be honest still the Levellers are my yardstick... are there ny other fold singers/bands who focus on modern issues rather than english heritage/history a la Seth Lakeman?

Levellers, Alabama 3, Oysterband are all "neo-folk" - and worth listening to. There is a blurring of the lines between the old punk/folk movements, and some of it is pretty good.
