easy 10,

Stop living in the past! :)

How can you accept semi's now? I'd rather not even go than settle for semi's....

The difference this time is that we have discipline and quality - rather like 1990...
and we were just unlucky there... this time we might be luckier. I also think we have more world-class players than in 1990 when Gazza and Lineker were arguably the only
world-class.

Its just my natural pessimism kicking in. If I allow myself to get carried away thinking that we really could go and win it, then the disappointment and dejection will be that much worse when it all goes tits up. And so far in my lifetime, it HAS gone tits up for one reason or another. Every single time.

We're England. We just don't have that winning mentality.

But you've explained exactly why in the above.

COME ON LET'S GO MENTAL. We are BY FAR the best team in the world.

I think we will get to the round of 16, get knocked out there. Play defensively in the group stages and squeak by.

We can win the World Cup, the F.A have delivered the managment the nation wanted and the tools for the job. The players are as talented as any in the world, in any cup competition you need a little bit of luck, but if we get it then we have as good a chance as anyone else.

We need to go in with a fully fit side who are hopefully not too fatigued after another enthralling season playing in the best league in the world.

Despite my negativity, at the last world cup there is no reason England should have made such a job of beatint Sweden and we really should have beat Ecuador. I was disappointed how the players performed, Sweden and Ecuador players really were playing their hearts out and we looked very ordinary. If Cappello can get the squad playing a bit positively and we get the luck of the draw we could make it to the semi-finals.

What was the last DECENT team we beat in the knockout stages of a Finals tournament ?
I think you've got to go back to Euro 96, Spain.

Based on current performances I think this could be one of the most evenly matched world cups in some time - nobody is really standing out as favourites IMHO.

Consensus round our Pub table still has Brazil up there (if for no other reason than they look difficult to beat), Spain possibly the best Euro team, and as an outside bet I fancy the Ivory Coast - not that I know anything mind.

Will be disappointed if England are not in Quarters - barring injuries/suspensions and media hype I would expect them to make the semis - and then its anyone's guess.
Yup. I was discussing it with my mates on Friday night (obviously before the Ukraine game) and we all agreed on Spain and Brazil as the teams to beat with Ivory Coast getting the most votes as a potential outsider. The usual caveats apply: i.e you can never write off the Italians and the Germans always come good whenever it's tournament time.

i think we have a great chance of winning it, but theres also about another 10 countries that on there day can also win it.

We havent had a lot of luck in recent tornaments, pen shoots outs, injurys and fluky goal ( Ronaldinho 2002 ), if we have a full strength squad, and we have a bit of luck then we have as good as chance as anyone.

I think I've probably seen this said about England in the run-up to just about every tournament we've qualified for.

What I will say is that unlike the last two World Cups, I honestly don't think we are going to go there and utterly STINK the place out. At 2002 and 2006 it was absolutely embarrassing how poor we were. Our performances (and the WAGS circus) made us a laughing stock in those tournaments, and thats not going to happen under Capello.

It'll be another gallant failure this time methinks.

But when was the last time we went into a major tournament with the highest goal to game ratio of any team? :drink:
