They can't, apparently. They need to get a load more subscribers but the end of next year apparently or else there in serious trouble

I smell another ITV Digital around the corner.... Just don't let those numpties at the Football League anywhere near another failing broadcaster.

I have cancelled my subscriptions to Setatnta but found out that they had still taken the rental from my credit card. I happened to notice it and checked back they have done for 3 months since I cancelled so have contacted credit card company.

When will the monopolies commission look into this pay per view TV for national sports?

Well first off it's not PPV for the England games. Not even sure Setanta do PPV?

Secondly why should they? All the time the FA/Premier League are selling the rights to these games for vast sums of money why shouldn't companies charge for them?

How do you suggest these companies get their ROI?

When Asda wanted to buy Safeway the Monopolies Commission said no it wasnt fair to the customers. When the brewers got too big they made them sell off their pubs and either brew beer or own pubs for the same reason. So how can it be fair for the customers if having paid for a TV license they have to pay an additional fee to watch a national team competing in a sport at national level. It is ok if you want to pay to watch Chelsea or Man Utd so be it that is your choice but we all have no choice if as this weekend England are playing.

Well as far as I'm aware Sky/Setanta have never tried to buy Safeways, nor do they brew beer so I'm not really seeing your point?

Using your argument it's unfair that we have any subscription based telly at all regardless of what it's showing. What's the answer? We scrap the TV licence and the BBC has to raise funds from advertising revenue? Or do we ban Sky/whoever from charging a subscription fee?

I really don't see what it's got to do with the monopolies commission when ever time the licences for these events go under the hammer there are always several companies interested in purchasing them. If it's anyone you want to be having a dig at it's the FA for not selling them to the beeb or ITV but then they are living in the real world and like any organisation want to get the best return for their product.

It will indeed be car-crash television. But I find myself inexplicably DRAWN to it.

You have a point. My favourite part is the post match interviews where the players all say they are hurting....but they'll be alright, need time etc. they've been saying this for best part of ten years now.

I like the bit when the camera goes to the manager in the technical area, chewing his fist in horror at what is unfolding before him.

Perhaps I am wrong and old fashioned but I believe that a national sport where our national team is particpating should be available to everybody. I believe that the Prem League Football League who ever should be allowed to sell the rights for them matches to whoever they wish exactly the same with County Cricket 20/20 etc but when it comes to the National side the matches should only be permitted to be shown on National terrestial TV.

If that means that it is not such a glamorous deal for Sky and they do not offer as much money so be it. The clubs will still survive and perhaps then wages for players would be realistic.

for what you pay, setanta is very good value

if you are a hockey or baseball fan, then nasn is part of the package
setanta sport doesn't just do premier and england, but bundesliga, french football, aussie rules, gaelic football, magners league rugby and HURLING. plus you get the horse racing channel as well

well worth EVERY penny

i also think all national sports involving england should be on terrestial tv. if we want to get the kids intrested in what is meant to be the pinnicle of our sports then surely it should be freely available to everyone. what next? if england ever got to a world cup final would that end up on some poxy channel that needs subscription? hope not but can see it happening. surely the best we have to offer should be shown to young kids if the future of our sports is to ever get any better.
i already pay shit loads for the full sky package so i can watch football. so dont want to pay even more for setanta, so looks like i will have to miss these games which is very annoying. unless i go to the pub which costs too much along with taxi fare there and back. all football should be on terrestrial or 1 package not a bit on sky and another bit on setanta. football wouldnt survive without fans and the fa seem to be doing all the can to drive the fans away. just in the name of money.

rant over, off to bed!!!!

To avoid all the talk of Shitanta, I'll just tell you the results now:

Andorra 0-4 England
Croatia 2-0 England

So you don't have to watch them

Whilst I agree with your sentiment I think you've got to realise that the FA has a very sell-able product in the national team now. This is 100% down to the popularity of football in this country now. That success can only be attributed to the Premier League and the amount of games now shown on television.

Whilst it would be wonderful if the FA did turn round and say we want as many people as possible to be able to see the national side so we are going to give the rights to the BBC or ITV it's just not going to happen all the time Sky/Setanta/Virgin/whoever else can come in and say but we'll give you X million to have exclusive rights to show games.

The only other alternative is to get the government to add the games to the protected sporting events list. If you do it for football where do you draw the line? Rugby? Cricket? Christ I was flicking through Sky last night and they had international bowls on!
