I don't think we will be able to see any differences until we come up against a tougher team, but then again these are the sorts of teams we struggled against in the Euro Qualifying.

I saw one positive, the wit of Lawrenson.

"He (Ashley Cole) is very versatile. He'll do anything for you in any position"

Somebody should have told Cheryl before they married!

Is it just me that was dissapointed with the performance and I have no idea how Gerrard got man of the match.
Still confirmed a couple of things Brown is marginally better than Kerry Mayo, Rooney cannot play upfront on his own and our defence is crap. I am not expecting instance results but I also don't agree with the blind optimism that we are now a world beater.

I was quite happy with it all last night

  • We ended up playing much better than how we started, something we haven't done for ages..

  • The substitutions DID actually change the way we were playing in a positive way

  • We won

I reckon things just may get better :)

I thought first half we played awful. Then again, the players were slaughtered quite rightly after the croatia game, plus add the fact that it was Capello first game, then you can understand perhps the nervy start. The goal certainly calmed us down.

Second half I was impressed. No we are not world beaters, far from it. But there were a lot of positives and negatives that Capello will work on.

The positives

The idea of keeping the ball and working the opening stayed with the players more and more as the game went on. Even when Crouch came on (and under McClown that was a signal to hump it), the players still kep the ball and passing it on the ground.

The number of chances that we created was good to see. We really should have taken another goal and 3-1 would have been about right.

Several players showed real promise. We know about Joe Cole and Rooney ec, but I thought Bentley played very well and so did Wright Phillips.

Capellos methods will take time, but they have proved to work elsewhere. This lot knows that they have to do it his way or out.

Players will be in the team on form and merit. Owen didn't make it in the team either as sub. No more just in on reputation.

The negatives and there plenty to work on. But here are some

We are still weak in that left back position. Ashley Cole is as good as we are gonna get. Yep, he is cashley and yep he is a git, but he is the best we have in that spot, so its pointless booing him. Bridge is just crap.

I'm concerned that despire creating a fair gilt edged chances we didn't take them. Both Rooney and Cole are not prolific for their clubs or for England.

Gerrard needs to be told that he doesn't need to belt the ball to the player every time.

I'm sure there are others.

Still its onwards and upwards. Be interesting aganist France. I would take a defaet (as long as we are not thrashed), as long as the positives are maintained and we can cut back on the negatives. That way the results will start to come.

I was happy.

Playing the formation we did allows us to play with one striker and since we dont have that many international class forwards this is a good thing.

We have a host of midfielders who can get beyond the strikers as shown last night and it works, its harder to pick them up than a striker.

We kept the ball, we didnt hoof it which we normally do when leading by an odd goal which gives it back to the other side.

.

Do we have more ""international class"" midfielders though? Jenas is not exactly a stand-out player so why not play Crouch who works well with Rooney and has a fantastic international scoring record?

Its a fair point, However 4 4 2 has not worked for England in the past, we give the ball away to much and tend to hump it up field too much when we have two men up there.

For Me I would have Crouch as the one up top and fit Rooney as the one in the hole.

On a side note, the Dutch managed to beat the Croatians 3-0 last night in Croatia, and without van Horseface, Robben, van Persie or Seedorf. And the Dutch ALWAYS draw their friendlies.

How f***ing hard can it be?

Like kinky and others I was really pleased that we didn't just hoof it forward. Lesson One has been learnt - if you haven't got the ball you can't score.

Now we've just got to try and educate the crowd so they don't boo when the ball is passed around whilst we're probing for an opening. All the crowd do is make the players nervous. That booing and the fact that the 'minutes' silence was cut to 27 seconds just confirms what I've thought for a long time which is that most people who go to England games (with the honourable exception of Uncle Buck and a few others) are ignorant wankers.

Sadly this is true, and I would be shocked if it costs the manager h is job because the Mighty England are not sticking 7 past the likes of The Swiss.

I was at the match last night, and from where I was it was a bit like watching Subbuteo (this being after I'd stopped gawping at the frankly AWESOME new Wembley Stadium). First half we seemed a bit devoid of ideas and rather indecisive in the final third, up until Joe Cole wriggled into the box and set Jenas up.

Second half was better, and even Bentley (who was gash the entire match) managed a cross (which evaded everyone).

Anyway, I enjoyed myself, and I also know the reason why people are slow to get out for the second half - its the beer queue, they need to employ some Irish bar staff.
