The jobs that he's 'good' at, i.e. holding midfielder and right-back are already covered by Jamie Carragher.

Bizarre that he's gone - should have taken Defoe instead

I agree with ALL that

He's a superb holding midfielder, far better than Carragher.

If there is an unnecessary midfielder in the squad it is without doubt Jermaine Jenas. I doubt he'll get on the bench let alone the pitch. Bent should be there instead.

Agree in part with both Hiney and Silent Bob - should have dropped Hargreaves or Jenas and should have taken Bent or Defoe. Any combination of the above would be better than what's currently in the squad, much more balanced!

Defoe should have gone unless Rooney, Owen, Crouch and Walcott were all 100% fully fit. If any of them gets injured then we are in trouble as we will have no reserves. We could see John Terry upfront alongside Crouch!

Yeah, I'd forgotten about Jenas.

I actually think Hargreaves is OK - he can't be that bad if he plays regularly for Bayern Munich.

The trouble is, he always looks rubbish for England, although I seem to remember him having a decent game when he came on in the last World Cup against Argentina.

I suppose all will be forgotten if Rooney recovers and Michael Owen knocks in a hat trick on Saturday but the FACT remains, we are short on strikers.

I think I'd rather have the man who does it every week for Bayern than the one who did it eight years ago for Liverpool.

Although I rate him as a player, Jenas is the one I would have left out - three or four players can all play where he does; I can't see when we'd need him.

If that bloke started, scored a hatrick and we won 3-0 he still wouldn't get MOM!

NOBODY LIKES HIM!
His squad number ought to be 1066 then.....

Agree on all counts. Jenas is quite good but no consistencty, and he's never gonna get in our midfield barring an unparralleled injury crisis.
Whereas if Owen gets injured and Rooney breaks down (not too far fetched a scenario :glare: ) than we're up the creek without a paddle.

I think most people keep thinking along those lines. Myself included.

However, Phil Neville used to play regularly for Manure - that didn't necessary make him any good.

Has anyone on here watched Hargreaves play for Bayern Munich? I haven't so I can't say too much. Just wondered if he shines in their team or whether he is just a 'fade away in the background' bit-part player for them?
