I think that now is the time to do it because there are 5 tests in 6 weeks, this series is relentless and Cook is spent.

This pitch is so docile I still fancy we'll still bat out for a draw, in which case the new captain will start the second match at 0-0. I'll be angry if Cook is retained, fails again in the next test and the new captain is then 1-0 down with 3 to play against an Indian side with their tails up.

Since the narrow but wonderful home Ashes series win a couple of years back, England have deteriorated massively.
The old chestnuts of the 1988 to 2004 era, have returned:
An inability to take 20 wickets in a test
Opponents, no matter how lowly rated by the ICC and duff against everyone else, experiencing record batting partnerships all the way down to the 10th wicket.
Batting collapses on sterile wickets.
Dropped catches.

The ball is new and Plunkett is a tail-ender. Why is Root taking a single off the first ball and exposing Plunkett to 5 balls from Kumar, who already has 3 to his name?

When the **** will the England coaches teach the middle order how to bat with the tail? The runs aren't that important right now, it's about batting out time, shaving a bit off the clock, still batting going into Day 4.

I have a contact in India ( reasonably high up the cricket pecking order ) who informs me that Indian scientists have been studying ' hawkeye' for some time and are dubious as to its accuracy. We have all been sold on the idea that it is extremely reliable and can replicate the moving ball but those of us who have played a lot of cricket know that a cricket ball sometimes moves in a mysterious way. Go into a net and bowl 6 balls at the stumps and count the number of times you think its hitting and then at the last minute it doesn't. Hawkeye works on predictability but it has no way of coping with the unexpected. Sometimes the umpires intuition is more reliable than Hawkeye. Tennis has accepted Hawkeye as an arbiter of line calls but it doesn't necessarily mean its 100% accurate. It can't always follow the spin imparted and just plots the most predictable path. It also serves to cut down the number of disputes on court ( a la McEnroe / Tarrango etc )
I know DRS covers a wider range of issues than LBW's and I think its invaluable in determining run outs and stumpings. The Indians seem to be prepared to forsake this in their discomfort over Hawkeye. It wouldn't surprise me if they were working on their own system to introduce first in a home series and then to try and sell the idea worldwide.

Yep, despite all the contracts or perhaps because of them our team has gone from top rated in the rankings to third rate. Pathetic performance in the last 10 months. Especially the batsmen.

It turns out that I was! Jimmy's batting is improving and Root has done a great job. If we could keep these two at the crease for another half an hour tomorrow then we might head into their second innings with some momentum.
