106-1, Cook 51*, well played...................

It's been a struggle since lunch. Shami and previously Bumrah have been getting prodigious outswing to the left handers.

Cook has just taken his career test average back to 45.

90 more runs in the match will guarantee he finishes his career with 45+ average which - for an England opener - is incredible, especially over 160 tests. Only Boycott has done better since the war.
Good stat. I hope he makes it.

This innings shows how much we'll miss him. He's taken the big decision to retire from test cricket, a weight has been lifted off his shoulders and now he's posted a decent score.

You wonder what might have happened if Strauss had been succeeded by a decent opening partner. I fancy the mental anguish of seeing wickets falling early around him has effectively shortened his test career by a couple of years.

So we're about 110 ahead of where we normally are when the second wicket falls.

EDIT: THIRD wicket falls.

There must be a whole generation of kids who think "England batting collapse" is actually all one word. Anyway, we all know what happens next. We'll be 244-4 by close of play.

And 250-8 by 11:20 tomorrow morning.
